Destiny Hero Dogma

I know this question is going to come up and I want to verify it with some people higher along the food chain than myself...

Destiny Hero Dogma's effect states it cuts the opponents life points in half at their next standby phase. This we all know. Now, is this a continuious effect? In that it happens during every standby phase of the opponent? I would have to say no and that it only happens once. (And of course if it was special summoned properly AND if he stays on the field.)

This card cannot be Normal Summoned or Set. This card cannot be Special Summoned except by Tributing 3 monsters, including at least 1 "Destiny Hero" monster. One time only, when this card is Special Summoned, halve your opponent's Life Points during your opponent's next Standby Phase.

I disagree. That's no different from the current wording. In fact, it's kind of superfluous and aren't you always complaining about superfluous wording?

You've got an event, and an effect that references that event for the timing of its trigger. The next Standby Phase after the Special Summon is the timing. Since you didn't Special Summon him in your next turn after the damage was done, then you can't halve their Life Points in their next Standby Phase because it is the second Standby Phase since the Special Summon and NOT the "next" Standby Phase.

We're trying to make the card effect clearer, not as small as possible. Some superfluous wording is sometimes needed to help with that. Remember, some people still managed to read Unity and Sonic Shooter incorrectly (perhaps out of sheer bloodymindedness, I don't know).

I don't think that extra wording is necessary to make the effect clearer. The effect is perfectly clear already.

I think we've managed to focus in on the fact that this is a one time only effect. No need to quibble over something, that we essentially all agree on. I'll leave the thread open in case there are more questions, but let's put the wording issue to rest before it gets out of hand.

Ok, one other point to look at. Does Dogma need to be on the field to get that effect or is it a "game-state" mechanic that it lingers until the event to "resolve" that part of the effect?

In other words, if Dogma got BTH'd, would the LP slice still happen? He was Special Summoned correctly providing the requirement or "Cost" for the slice effect.

Diamond Dude does not need to be on the field to "resolve" the spell sent to the grave by his effect, so would Dogma need to remain to chop the LPs?

So yes, Dogma needs to be face-up on the field during the Standby Phase to halve the Life Points.
