Divine Wrath Article

Now, Divine Wrath time:

Card Text:

Divine Wrath

Counter Trap

Discard 1 card from your hand. Negate the activation and the effect of an Effect Monster and destroy the monster.

Divine Wrath can be used against any Trigger effect, besides Archfiends, because Archfiends are unique. Their Trigger effect occurs during chain resolution, so you cannot interrupt the chain to start a new one with Divine Wrath.

Divine Wrath can be used against Ignition effects, Multi-Trigger effects, and Flip Effects as well. Multi-Trigger effects include those such as Ryu Senshi, Dark Paladin, Horus the Black Flame Dragon LV 8, Sorceror of Dark Magic, Maryokutai, A-Team: Trap Disposal Unit, etc.

You can also chain Divine Wrath to effects of Effect monsters that activate when summoned, such as Dark Magician of Chaos, Marauding Captain (in this case, the monster that was going to be Special Summoned remains in the woner's hand), Mobius the Frost Monarch, and the always popular Breaker the Magical Warrior.

Ignition effects that are subject to Divine Wrath include: The Creator, Homunculus the Alchemic Being. Also Divine Wrath also has uses that apply more to specific cards:

1. The LV monsters - you can use Divine Wrath on the Ignition effect of sending it to the Graveyard to summon the next monster up in "the LV chain".

2. Union monsters - you can also use Divine Wrath whenever a Union monster activates its effect to equip itself to another monster.

3. Lava Golem - you can activate Divine Wrath when Lava Golem deals damage.

4. Spirit Monsters - you may activate Divine Wrath when a Spirit monster goes to its owner's hand and the Spirit monster will go to the Graveyard.

5. Relinquished - You may use Divine Wrath against either effect of Relinquished.

6. Thousand-Eyes Restrict (TER) - You may use Divine Wrath against TER's absorption effect.

7. Dark Necrofear - You may use Divine Wrath against Dark Necrofear's effect of turning itself into an Equip Spell card during the End Phase.

8. Monsters that Tribute themselves, or Send themselves to the Graveyard - You may use Divine Wrath to negate Exiled Force, Paladin of White Dragon, Red Eyes B. Chick, Kaibaman, Kuriboh, etc.

9. Graveyard Activation - Divine Wrath may be used against Helpoemer, Night Assailant, Sangan, and any other effect that activates in the Graveyard, even though Divine Wrath cannot destroy it, it does not need to destroy the monster Effect it is trying to negate to resolve properly.

10. Damage Step Abilities - Divine Wrath can be activated in response to non-Continuous effects that activate during the Damage Step, like Mystic Tomato, D. D. Warrior Lady, Reflect Bounder, Injection Fairy Lily, Mystical Knight of Jackal, Kinetic Soldier, either effect of Don Zaloog, Airknight Parshath's drawing effect, Hyper Hammerhead, etc. If you destroy the defending or attacking monster with Divine Wrath, no replay occurs, because once you reach the Damage Step, no replays can occur. The attack is stopped, but stilled considered successful, and the monster cannot attack again.

11. Conditional Triggers - Monsters such as Mystic Swordsman LV 2, and Sasuke Samurai, can be Divine Wrath-ed when they attack a face-down monster.

12. XYZ monsters - you can chain Divine Wrath to the Union of these monsters, or to the Fusions' effects.

13. Vampire Lord-like recursion - when Vampire Lord or Sacred Phoenix of Nephthys attempts to Special Summon itself, Divine Wrath can be chained, and since it never left the Graveyard, it will not Activate again.

14. Sinister Serpent - you can use Divine Wrath against Sinister Serpent, but that being said, they can re-activate it during that same Standby Phase, so there is little point to doing that.

Phew, now for when you CANNOT use Divine Wrath:

1. Lava Golem - when Lava Golem is Special Summoned, you CANNOT use Divine Wrath.

2. XYZ Monsters - you CANNOT use Divine Wrath to stop the removal of the pieces, because that is a Summoning condition, not an Effect.

3. TER - you cannot use Divine Wrath against TER's ability to stop changing of positions, because this is continuous.

4. Fusion Subs - You cannot chain Divine Wrath when a Fusion Substitute, like King of the Swamp, is used in a Fusion Summon, because that is a Continuous Effect.

5. Continuous Effect - Divine Wrath cannot be used against monsters with continuous effects, such as Giant Orc, Goblin Attack Force and Spear Dragon (changing of position and FMC effect are both continuous), Different Dimension Dragon has 2 Continuous Effects, Perfect Machine King, Raging Flame Sprite (either effect), Jinzo, Fire Princess, Mad Sword Beast, Hayabusa Knight, Cat's Ear Tribe, Amazoness Swords Woman, Harpie Lady 3, Fusilier Dragon, the Dual-Mode Beast, The Fiend Megacyber, Blade Knight (either effect), monsters that can attack directly (Toon Monsters, Jinzo #7, Drillago (i don't see how that could happen, but oh well), etc.), or monsters like Element Saurus and Shadow Ghoul that gain ATK continuously.

also, can you guys rate this??? i wanna know what you really think.

You're getting overhead again. Or something.

Konami didn't actually say that Triggered effects were defined by their ability to chain, did they? And since Konami defines the game terms, I'd follow them.

I don't know if you can say that...let's look at a lot of the "Cookie Cutter" cards and see what we have...

Black Luster Soldier - Envoy of the Beginning: If they decide to use monster removal, you can DW to negate and destroy.

Breaker the Magical Warrior: Turn player uses its priority to get its token. At this point, or when they decide to use it to break your spell/trap card, you can DW to negate and destroy.

Sinister Serpent: When its effect triggers in the graveyard, you can DW to negate and destroy. Unfortunately they could potentially activate it again according the the current rulings, but they might not catch on. 8^D

D. D. Warrior Lady: When they attempt to sac their lady in an attack to remove your big dog, you can DW to negate and destroy.

Sangan: Yes, DW can negate and destroy effects activating in the graveyard, so no Sangan search either.

I could go on...

How about all those flippers that are getting prevalent due to the Tsukuyomi abuse, use DW to negate and destroy that crucial Needle Worm they were attempting to deck you out with.

I do agree that the cost can be expensive at times, but considering the WIDE range of trigger effect monster in the game, I'm a little surprised its not run more often.

I myself make use of Divine Wrath, and yes the costs can be quite painful at times yet those two cards can stop many things, that a Bottomless Trap Hole can't. Although BTH itself is also a good card to keep close, yet it can certainly have to do with deck construction the choice of card to use.

Devine Wrath is a very good card, it doesnt see much play with its heavy cost. well now its heavy, back then it wasnt really. but people didnt use it anyways.

atleast in the TCG.

the card has alot of potential to negate practically anything.

with Monarch Control decks, this is a good side deck especially since they will be losing hitters and effects.

not to mention cyber stein hybrid decks can be kept on check.

they pay 5k you negate and destroy they have 5k less life points than before.

see the thing is people are so used to freebie effects that when good cards like this come out, they say it is a waste of time because you have to discard.

you have to discard for Lightning Vortex, and that sees plenty of play.

you have to pay 800 lp for Brain Control and that sees play as well.

costs are just small fees to pay to get good effects and devine wrath has a very good effect.

heck if it didnt it wouldnt show its face in a structure deck.

I LOVED the article. I just got my own Divine Wrath and was looking for rulings on it. I'm glad your article ran long. Most sites with rulings don't give you that many examples at to what you can and can't use it on. None that I've found anyway.
