Easy question, much confusion

The Kozaky show
I've got a question, that actually just needs confirmation: sometimes when I duel (via YVD, I mean), and I use a card such as Guardian Sphinx etc, they think I CAN'T flip it down with the effect, and then flip it up in the same turn manually (note: I didn't summon or set it in that turn).
One guy even told me, that at a tourney (got impression it was a regional he meant) the judges told him it COULDN'T be done...
So... what is the answer? Thanks guys.
Greetings,

Yes you can, flip it face-down with the effect and then turn it face-up manually. That would be the same as turning it face-down via Book of Moon and reflipping it manually.

Effects don't take away your once per-turn manual change.

But don't get mad at them. Because for a long time, that USED to be correct. There was a time when flipping through effect "stole" your once-a-turn manual position change.

Not really. The "Old Way" only affected monsters that were changing Battle Position, such as face-up attack to face-down defense.

If you were simply going from face-up defense to face-down defense, you could still flip it face-up with your manual position change.

But, that was then... back in the days where you could only record data on ONE layer of your recordable DVD.

True, but a flip summon isn't really just a flip, it's also a change. So if GS were in F/U ATK position, and then flipped itself F/D, then you couldn't flip summon it by the old rules.
