Enemy-Controller while monster zones are full

Player A has 5 monsters on the field: can he activate Enemy-Controller to tribute one of those monster and take control of one opponent's monster?

I suppose he cannot, 'cause he should have an empty monster zone before the activation of this card to get the chance to activate it...

No, activation requirements must be fulfilled during activation, so you can do it.

Part of the activation requirement is the cost, so by the time you're done with activating, there is an empty monster slot, which fits the requirements.

You must activate the card, choose the effect, sacrifice the monster (if applicable), and choose the monster in one fell swoop, so you can't fulfill one activation requirement for the other's effect.

So really, why would you even say that?

yes you may. Some of the substeps of activation, like modal choices and timing of cost payments, are sometimes quibbled over, but the gist of what Raijinili told you is a good summary.

you will have sent one monster from your side of the field before trying to Appropriate an opposing monster. So, an open monster zone would be available.

Now, lets make it fun!:

I have 5 monsters on my side of the field and a face down card in the s/t zone.

I activate Enemy Controller and choose to use the 2nd effect. I tribute one monster from my side of the field in order to complete the activation requirement. Now I can proceed with the rest of the effect. My opponent has no response.

But wait! I decide to chain to my own effect by activating Call of the Haunted (or the Embodiment of Apothosis, if you care). When the chain resolves CotH has plugged up that remaining monster zone.

Does the monster Enemy Controller attempted to take go to the Graveyard, or does Enemy Controller simply resolve without effect?

Answer?

You are right, but the monster controlled via Change of Heart will go to the graveyard if he attempts to return when the proprietary's field is full, this time we have a monster who cannot pass on the opponent's side of the field...

So, the effect will simply Disappear.

Well, yes. The game mechanics regarding Change of Heart are different, as the monster is attempting to return to a place that is no longer available. It cannot stay on the opposing side, it cannot return, so it goes to the Graveyard.

However, the way Possessed Dark Soul works is more similar to the example I was thinking of.

Lets say you have Possessed Dark Soul and 4 other monsters on your side of the field. Your opponent controls multiple Level 3 or lower monsters.

The controlling player chooses to tribute PDS to activate its effect and take control of the low level (3*-)monsters on the opponent's side of the field. Only one space is available (that one vacated by the tributed PDS). The other Level 3 monsters are destroyed, due to the mechanics.

This sounds very similar to tributing a monster for the effect of Enemy Controller and then blocking the space up with a monster Specially summoned via Call of the Haunted.

The monster is prevented from going over due to a lack of space. Just like monsters from PDS that cannot go over due to lack of space.

The monster targeted by Enemy Controller should, IMO, be destroyed by the same mechanic.

Yes if your opponent has a full field a monster trying to return will get destroyed, but:
When a chain-link is trying to resolve and it has only one effect if that effect can't resolve, then the card/chain-link resolves without effect. Cards only resolve as much as possible when they have multiple effects.

So,
If you have a monster on the filed, and you play Change of Heart, then chain Scapegoat, the monster will not be destroyed.
Change of Heart cannot resolve properly in this case, so it resolves without effect.

And the same will apply to Enemy Controller, as its a chain-link trying to resolve.

A chain resolving is completely different than an effect in the end phase.

ah. So, its the chaining itself that causes the "fizzle" (love that word, even if its a little fuzzly in description)

I have never enjoyed being told Im wrong so often as I do when I come here.
*happy sigh*
