Exiledforcefreak's guide to building a unique deck

The academic year is finally over and I have about a month to write a few articles before going to upstate New York to work at a camp. My first article will be an article on what many of you here at IG forums know me well for; unique deck building.

There are three kinds of unique decks; concept, base, and support. A support deck is a deck that has specific support like warriors. To build a unique support deck is very difficult; you need to use cards"¦ or concepts not typically used. One thing you need to remember about unique decks is that they are only unique till everyone else uses them... catch 22 I believe the term is. Some thoughts that come to mind when I think of a unique support deck is insect, normal weenie monster, or a fiend deck based around Goblin King. You know you're ready to make this deck when you think something along the lines of "I should try that deck out" or "I wonder if that deck would work".

A base deck is a deck where you go through all the sets and you come across a card that makes you think to yourself "I could build a deck around this card". Some of these decks, like Last Turn and Skill Drain, have become mainstream and are not considered unique for this reason. Other cards that come to my mind are Chaos Necromancer, Gren Maju Da Eiza, Bad Reaction to Simochi, Final Attack Orders, Labyrinth of Nightmare, Final Countdown, Stumbling, Destiny Board, Fire Princess, Reversal Quiz"¦ I'm sure there are more, I'm just not aware of them all. You know you're ready to make this kind of deck when you think to yourself "I could make a deck around this card".

The third, and most creative deck, someone can make is a concept deck. A concept deck is a deck that is not based around a card or any specific support. You come up with a concept and you"¦ put a deck together. Perhaps the best (and most mainstream) example is a high level monster deck. Someone had the idea to make a deck with a lot of high level monsters so they started out with high level monsters and found cards that bring them out easily; cards like Reasoning, Monster Gate, A Hero Emerges, and Spirit Reaper as tributes. Then that person threw in some staples, play tested the deck and tweaked it accordingly. Some other decks that come to mind are deck-out (also know as mill) and morph (fusion). As a side note I have tried a monster control deck myself. You know you're ready to make this kind of deck when you think to yourself "I want to make a deck that does "“fill in the blank-". I've been working on a deck designed to piss off my opponent; I know its working because some duelists just scoop after a few turns.

As many of you know, I have built a deck based around Secret Barrel; I load up my opponent's hand by using Cyber Jar multiple times and ending the game with x3 Secret Barrels. Inspiration can strike you at any time, Chaos emperor dragon is what inspired my deck idea, it (my idea) remained dormant until I found out about Secret Barrel. If you have something similar to that stuck in your head I encourage you to make the deck and tweak it until it works (no matter how long it takes).

When making a unique deck research every set thoroughly, even old sets. Read every single card, even if you already know what it does. No card is off limits when making something different because the point is to use something or do something no one else does. There really isn't much else I can do to help the reader of this article come up with a unique deck idea, something like that has to come from the reader. This article is intended for three things: a guide, an inspiration, and to get the gears turning. Good luck and don't give up.

I was reading the Side Deck article, and couldnt resist coming back to post here.

I think the hardest thing for many (from the conversations and observations Ive had with others) when creating "unique" decks is perserverance. It is not as insurmountable as many make it out to be to invent an unusual deck. However, sometimes (speaking for myself only) the ideas flood so fast that my card Supply requires I dismantle 1-3 decks per week in order to build another idea.

Its the testing phase; the tweaking and finetuning; the failures and failures and ...failures that you encounter that are what will really help you hone your skills as a builder, in order to create a mix of cards and ideas that flow and function the way you dreamed of originally.

Perserverance.

Btw: the article was nicely written. very professional, clean, and informative.:)

A very useful article, in agreement with Squid. I've been trying to build unique decks for a long time, normally I give it about a week or two before giving up. The only deck I have stuck to is the one I am currently making, Spirits. It has failed so many times it's beyond a joke and the amount of people I have duelled who have either laughed at me and called me noob, suggested I try a cookie cutter deck or tell me to give up entirely because no matter how hard I try I will always fail. But something tells me to keep trying with this deck as there is a possibility of it working out. I base my spirit deck on Spirit's Invitation to give me a clear shot at my opponents life points (trouble is I am not sure what to do next :-s). An Article I saw previously suggested using Mind Crush and Chain Energy, which I have tried, only problem is that Chain Energy messes me up as well as I need the lifepoints, but I know I am getting close to making it work.

For all duelists out there wanting to try making a brand new deck, go for it, it does yeald rewards soon enough, just don't expect much help from the Cookie Cutter duelists who think they are so good, plus be prepared because people might insult your duelling skills or deck if they beat you 9200 - 0 (which happened to me)

When I build a deck I like to think of a combo that works well. Then I try to come up with a few more combos with the cards that were in the first combo. After I get three or four combos I add cards that support those cards so I can pull off several of those combos. This makes the deck run better with less bad draws.

Mazera - Use Asura Priest + Malevolent Nuzzler This gives you the ability to attack all of his monsters with a 2400 ATK monster each turn. You pay 500 lp and put Nuzzler back on top to draw again and reuse.

Use Asura Priest + Earthquake gives you the ability to attack all of his monsters in defense clearing the field.

Use Asura Priest + Final Attack Orders + Ojama Trio gives you the ability to attack all of his tokens for 2000 damage each for a total of 6000. Ouch!

There are many combos with Asura Priest you just have to find them.

Crash

Which Spirit Monsters are you using? I haven't seen you post this latest deck and I know a couple of us have been using some of the more unusual spirits for unusual deck ideas. Sometimes it is better to work around the bouncing and keep them on the field. You should post this deck and I'd be happy to give you some tips.

the article is 6 months old. some of the example given are no longer current even though the concepts still hold. I have no clue what your talking about when you talk about spirit monsters and I'm not about to try to find out at 2am :so:

GET INSPIRED!!!!

I was inspired by Divine Sword - Phoenix Blade

as shown here: http://www.cogonline.net/threads.13000

What card inspires you?

Spend enough time on a deck and it can be at least 2nd teir. I spent 9 months on my Cyber Jar OTK and it went from last teir to 2nd teir.

Chaos Necromancer, Final Countdown, and Stumbling. All these cards have great potential. I havn't even looked thoroughly through the new sets yet.

make something differant that works!!!!!
(I'll even help if you want)
