Guardian Sphinx PGD-025

Guardian Sphinx
LV5
ATK:1700 DEF:2400
You can flip this card into face-down Defense Position once per turn during your Main Phase. When this card is Flip Summoned, return all monsters on your opponent's side of the field to the owner's hand.

Rulings
  1. [Re: Arsenal Summoner] You can add a card to your hand with "Guardian" in its name as long as it's not listed on "Arsenal Summoner", such as "Guardian of the Throne Room" or "Guardian Sphinx".
  2. [Re: Criosphinx] If multiple monsters are sent to the hand simultaneously (such as with "Guardian Sphinx"), the effect of "Criosphinx" only activates once, so only 1 card is discarded.
  3. [Re: Dramatic Rescue] You can activate "Dramatic Rescue" when an Amazoness on your side of the field is targeted, such as with any Equip Spell Card, "Tribute to The Doomed", "Trap Hole", "Man-Eater Bug", "Relinquished", "Dark Cat with White Tail", "Amazoness Spellcaster", "Penguin Soldier" (even if it targets 2 monsters), "Change of Heart", "Ring of Destruction", "XYZ Dragon Cannon", etc. But not when cards like "Raigeki", "Dark Hole", "Mirror Force", "Fissure", "Creature Swap", "Guardian Sphinx", "Bottomless Trap Hole", "Adhesive Trap Hole", etc. are used.
  4. [Re: Final Attack Orders] While "Final Attack Orders" is active, you can change monsters like "Guardian Sphinx" to face-down Defense Position, and while they are face-down, "Final Attack Orders" has no effect on them.
Continuing Rock week, today we look at a card from the forgotton set of PGD, Guardian Sphinx.
The sphinx has medicore ATK power in today's Metagame, but it is surely is not ment for attacking. It's DEF is a solid 2400 which can stop all except He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named. It's effect can be effective when running D.D. Designator or any other Hand Ddestruction card. What makes it even better is that it can be flipped face down with it's own effect, and then re used.
It can be awesome back up when you have your big hitter on the field.
Downsides to it that it is vulnerable to Nobleman. When you flip it face down, your opponent knows what to expect next, so he gets ready for it.

Overall this card doesnt fit well in most decks, but can certainly pack a suprise in some.

Advanced Format Rock Deck- 3.5- Other useful cards like Megarock Dragon can take it's place
Traditional Format Rock Deck- 2.7/5- Even worse. In Traditional your opponent would have much ease to destroy it.
Overall- 3/5

This is my first CotD so be gentle :)

Guardian Sphinx is its on "Envoy of the End" in its own right. Long long ago in a galaxy far far away when I was running earth decks, I did some serious trading to get ahold of this little gem. NoX wasn't played as much, if at all and a Giant Trunade followed by a Sphinx flip usually opened the doors to the game finisher when prepped right. If you opponent didn't have any tools to remove the Sphinx, it became a really nasty beast, because your opponent didn't even have time to set a flipper like Man-Eater Bug or the like.

In todays game I agree that it needs some work, but I still value you it quite highly and have seen it floating around from a few miscellaneous events I've judged.

Great job Shooky! You make us Monarchs proud!

Swarm of locust destroys spell and trap cards, but your opponent could jsut chain them to that effect. And chances are you won't be destroying much in the way of Spell Cards anyway.

Morphing Jar #2 will send spell and trap cards directly from the deck to the graveyard. Your opponent will not ever get a chance to use "Nobleman of Crossout" etc if its in the graveyard.

Though, i don't think that this is a good strategy witht he amount of play Magician of Faith is receiving, as MJ#2 summons cards face-down, and puts spell cards into the graveyard, a double-whammy.
