High def. monsters in your deck?

hehe, I go back to my original comment, I nearly always keep a solid defender in the mix because you just never know when things are going to go haywire or you're going to have those dead draws. I can't tell you how many times that Wall has saved me, especially after a powerful ritual or level up summoning.

...and a quick sidenote, the Ojama Staunch Defender combo doesn't work. Staunch Defender can't change the defense position monsters to attack position. I learned this the hard way in my Wall of Illusion deck. You need to either throw a Windstorm of Equata into the mix (causes issues with your own defender) or run a Dark Spirit of the Silent.

EDIT: I know some people flip over the Staunch Defender thing and just to let you know, it was addressed in the judges list here: http://lists.upperdeck.com/read/messages?id=3385#3385
EDIT2: John actually asked this before even THAT post...He's the man! Always on top of it! 8^D

It does work. You just have to work Zero Gravity in to the combo. Or Windstorm of Etaqua. My deck ran ero Gravity for that purpose and for other reasons.

Meh im an old fashion guy, I mainly use high defense monsters with Shield and Sword.

Speaking of Shield & Sword....built such a deck not long ago.

Gear Golem the Moving Fortress
Golem Sentry
Roulette Barrel
Guardian Sphinx
Giant Rat
etc.

As I was using Giant Rat I put in an Exiled Force of course and had a monster slot open. I needed a punch so I grabbed a Injection Fairy Lilly as it seemed to make sense with Giant Rat. It wasn't until I had Injection Fairy Lilly and Shield & Sword in my hand at the same time that I realized that Shield & Sword make IFL 1500 atk....before her boost, bringing her total to 4500 atk....that was a bit of a shock to my opponent.

Guardian Sphinx and Golem Sentry worked nicely with Shield & Sword to as it wasn't left in atk position vulnerable with a low atk after my attack (flipping them face down again in MP2 of course)

Never thought about it but a copy of Horn of the Unicorn might be fun with that deck as well. I used to pull that trick with Asura Priest.

<catching myself> I'm babbling again <blush> Sorry folks!

Your logic befuddles me. Are you saying if people DIDN'T use high defense monsters, then Smashing Ground wouldn't work? Smashing destroys the highest defense monster on the field. If all your monsters have 300 defense, then it will destroy a monster with 300 defense. If you have a monster with 2200 defense, smashing will take out the monster with 2200 defense. Smashing WILL destroy a monster, avoiding high defense monsters won't change that fact.
Nope, I'm saying that if I am counting on keeping a high defense monster on the field, that Smashing Ground will get rid of it first, even if I have offensive threats on the field.

True. Although that does bring up the point of bait. If you're counting on keeping your high ATK, low DEF monster on the field because it has some necessary effect, pop out the almighty Wall of Illusion, and then neither Smashing nor Fissure can get to it. And I highly doubt any one will attack your Wall and THEN play Smashing, for the simple reason that I doubt anyone will attack your wall. :icon_cool:

Guardian Sphinx and Golem Sentry, oooo I hadn't though about the flippers :dj_eek, I think im going to test that out :p, if you don't mind of course.

I always used Shield and Sword with cards like Creature Swap and the likes, I just love to see my opponents face when I summon let's say a GAF or something like that to take down their Cyber Dragon or anything else, CSwap it and use Shield and Sword, :p

Oh yeah, good 'ol Guardian Sphinx. I fought tooth and nail to pick up one of those back in the day. Probably one the best single trib defenders out there. 2400 prevents it from attacks by virtually everything in the meta (minus the Dark Ruler, of course 8^D) and it winds up draining your opponent into constantly attacking it and losing lifepoints in order not to fall prety to a flip summoning bump. I'd run it if I was in a pinch for sure.

Sometimes, with the current meta often times, sending an opponent's monster back to their hand is a MUCH better option than destroying it in battle. We of course are seeing a great many Mystic Tomatos, Newdoria, Sangan, etc.

Those search engines are what we want to keep away from an opponent. Golem Sentry is a great tool agaist such monsters as well as a nice way to get rid of a face down flip effect monster for the time being....and of course, offers up a respectable def.

One creature I'm shocked to not see listed is Big Shield Gaurdna. He can negate Nobleman (equals-1) and 2600 ain't gonna break easy. Granted he won't hold up to more than one atk, but i like him. I was acutally thinking about using him in my local tourney this weekend. Mid-Shield is probably better, but hey I wanna run him.

I've seen Big Shield Gardna a number of times in competitive play....and the people whom I saw plaing it do quite well.

If I could get my hands on one I'd certainly put it in my Exodia Deck where I run Dark Door, I'd think it to be an excellent combination.

Humanoid Slime, Island Turtle, Oppressed People, Maiden of the Aqua, Nightmare Penguin.

Takes Tribe-Infecting Virus with them.

Oppressed People might be the best of them, as it's a card that most people wouldn't think of as being Aqua. (So Tribe would be used against it accidentally :D )

Geez jsut because everybody uses it doesn't mean it should be banned...

Afterall its easier to counter a card when buidling a deck if that card is used by everybody.

But if its only used by 55% percent of people than half the time your counter ideas are going to be useless.

I Remeber La Jinn he used ot be a force to be reckoned with. He used to be fighting alongside my Swordstalker those were the days... High Defense Monsters. Hrm.. I don't run many. Unlessyou count Attackers as well. My Blue-Eyes has enough defense.
