unless you scale, you don't have that much of a chance of getting a Black Luster. If you would have scaled 30 packs, your chance in crease dramatically of getting the 3 good cards in the set. Only thing that bugged me was that I scaled IOC when It came out and kept getting Invader of Darkness. Then the next day, i just pull some packs from a box at my local card shop and I get both Black Luster and Chaos Dragon...go figure!
 
DAMN IT. I wish I could scale, but I don't know where to get a scale. I can't buy it over the internet because I don't have a credit card.
 
not neceserally true.

a scale is used to figure out which packs contain foiled cards and which do not. they do not automatically read "you got a envoy!!" in the little scale thing. all it does is check for wheight.

and the reason why i said about the box, is because he would get the complete box.

with 6-7 foils.

packs, 4,6,12 on left and 4,6,12 on right and 10 in one of the sides will contain the extra, if your lucky. or atleast thats how it is for the newer sets.

I keep hearing packs 3-7-11 are the holos. But I opened a few boxes and the very first one on the left was a super, so go figure. :confused: I don't really think the pattern trick can be counted on too well.
 
Dude, getting scales are easy.... Go hit up your local grocery store and get the largest trout they are selling there. Scrape it all off, then rub them on top of the packs in question, the ones that turn a gold color are the ones that have the holos in them. You're set! I'm 12 for 12 on Chaos Emperor Dragons this way. I grabbed 4 for 5 on DMOC too only because the light at the Wal-Mart store was a little tinted and distracted me.

That's exactly why I hate Ultimate Rares. All they have done is reduce the odds of getting an Ultra-rare.

Not exactly, although you only have a 1 in 24 chance of pulling any ultra rare, tehre are only 4 ultra rares, a 1 in 96 chance of pulling the ultra rare card you want.

AST and before there were 10 ultra rares, so a 1 in 120 chance of pulling the card you want.

And as long as you buy hobby packs, you increase your chances of getting the cards you need as you can pull the ultimate rare version: (if the odds of getting any ultimate rare are 1 in 12 then that would be an additional 1 in 132 chance, or about 1 in 63 total (similar to the former chances of pulling the super rare you want)
 
Ok for all those who said that packs x, y & z on whichever side contain the holos I buy enough sealed boxes for myself to tell you with 99.95% certainty that it's random, there's no specific ordering as to which ones contain the holos. You might get a pattern across 2 or 3 boxes but if you do it's just by fluke and not a pattern across the entire print, otherwise UDE would guarantee a number of holos per box.
 
So the only sure way is to scale? And then the second best way is to use the dot trick? and then the third best way is to hope right?

Can't argue with that maths!

But the point I was making, is that the spaces they give to Ultimate Rares are annoying because an Ultimate Rare might end up just being a parallel of a rubbish regular rare or something.

That's why I preferred the old system of SCR -> Common.
 
IOC packs are currently only $2.97 at Wal-Mart; as for cost effectiveness, I find it best to start with one box and depending on what I'm missing, going solo or buying another box. A perfect example is AST; I bought one box and was still missing an enemy controller; the price of the enemy controller was about $16-18 online and the box was going for as low as $29 at dacardworld so I bought another box; got the controller and a few trade cards. That's how I've done it since LOD however the cost is high but cheaper than trying to buy 2-5 single cards that will run over $15 each; specifically speaking about the POTD set.
