Is it time for Water again?

After judging last weekend's regional in Iowa and after having played a couple of tournaments with in the new format I was updating a few decks last night. I was searching through some less played decks for one I could steal a BTH out of having seen so many Zaborgs, Airknights....tribute monsters in general....when I opened up my Water deck. As I thumbed through my pre-4/1 deck it hit me like a ton of bricks....a Water deck may very well be the way to go at this point.

Lets look at some of the cards...

1. Treeborn Frog
2. Abyss Soldier
3. Levia-Dragon - Daedalus
4. Giga Gagagigo
5. Mobius the Frost Monarch
6. Penguin Soldier
7. A Legendary Ocean

Just by that list most of you will see the advantages of a Water deck in this format but for those of you who don't lets break it down.

1 Treeborn Frog-field presence and tribute fodder. If A Legendary Ocean is active no tribute will usually be needed and Treeborn Frog won't return, no problem. If A Legendary Ocean is absent then Treeborn Frog will return and you use it as a tribute. It's also an ideal card to discard for Abyss Soldier's effect.

2. Abyss Soldier-as mentioned great with Treeborn Frog and a solid attacker, especially with A Legenday Ocean on the field. In this format any effect that removes a monster from the field is good!

3. Levia-Dragon - Daedalus- Dark Hole is gone, swarm and special summons run wild, Treeborn Frog returns and now you have A Legendary Ocean in your hand...all the elements are there to clear the field.

4. Giga Gagagigo- yeah I know it's a NORMAL monster...but one with 2450 atk....50 atk higher than Jinzo, all Monarchs, and even stands toe to toe with Dark Ruler Ha Des...AND with A Legendary Ocean on the field it requires no tribute.

5. Mobius the Frost Monarch- We all know the value of Mobius and with A Legendary Ocean on the field he becomes a 2600 atk monster able to overcome all monarchs, Jinzo, Dark Ruler Ha Des....every 5-6 Star monster with the exception of another copy of himself.

6. Penguin Soldier- Don't underestimate the Penguin in this format. Anytime you can help clear the field in this format a card should be considered. You can also reclaim a used up MOF, return Mobius to your own hand to use again, etc. Combine Penguin Soldier with Tsukuyomi just like you do MOF.

7. A Legendary Ocean-With MOF up to 2 co;ies it's much easier to reclaim and gives the boost needed to make your Water mosters stronger than the competition. Obviously the lowering of your water monsters by 1 star is HUGE, especially when it comes to Giga Gagagigo.

Good point John. It is getting better in this format... Now hope that just not TOO much people read this ;) Otherwise Konami/UDE might consider banning certain WATER-cards :(

well i'm planning on taking my water deck to the regionals this weekend in DFW i have high hopes but i really haven't had the chance to play cookie so i don't think i will be top eighting at this regionals

I just do not see why Water Decks are coming out now? Abyss Soldier being at 3 really should not send a flag to people that "Abyss Soldier + Treeborn Frog = WOW". I mean even without Sinister Serpent, Treeborn Frog should not be viewed as the new Sinister Serpent. Both work similiar in effect, but work on different principles (hand and field). It does not come back to your hand. When it comes to the WATER Deck, you are not even going to Tribute for the most part because of A Legendary Ocean. Shame that you see the same type of Water Decks out there.

All I see is the huge beat-down WATER offers. A simply Cursed Seal of the Forbidden will pretty much sink that Deck once you get a good enough presence on the field with your monsters.

I don't remember seeing any Cursed Seal in being played in the last regional I judged, as a matter of fact I only remember seeing one copy in someone's side deck <shrug> pretty slim odds.

It's not that Treeborn Frog is the reason for a Water deck being Appropriate for this format, that's just an additional reason. You stated one of the major reasons yourself, it's a beatdown format.

<stopping myself> It's obvious you didn't read carefully through my whole post or the answers would have been self evident. You're entitled to your opinion and I to mine, ours seem to seldom agree.

Because TCG players only care about hand advantage and ratios. No one really bothers to care about preventing what their opponent does either. Also, TCG players do not like the idea of tossing 1 card from their hand, let alone 1 specific card. I always use Cursed Seal of Forbidden so I have no problem with that.

And it is obvious to me that you did not stop yourself, made an assumption about me reading or not reading the whole post or the answers provided. For your information, I read it all. Treeborn Frog still should not viewed as the new Sinister Serpent in my opinion. It is a one trick pony for Abyss Solider in that at least for that moment, you discarded a card that MAY come back and it was WATER. I rather just Salvage to 2 1500 ATKs than try to wait it out for 1 card in my Deck.

As I said, you're entitled to your opinion and I to mine. I don't care to debate the point further...it would be a waste of time.

While most of you know me as a fiend man, I do have one deep dark skeleton that I've always wanted to see come to light.

Orca Mega-Fortress of Darkness

Yeah, there's something about the aqua barrage that can occur with the monster/spell trap removal, followed by a continuous 2100 or 2300 LP chomp when setup nicely.

The frog allows for some extra summoning power and Abyss Soldier gives the added removal necessary. Of course a Dadelus would go in because that kind of tactical nuke is hard to resist.

Maybe this is the time to finally flesh this one out.

Darn right it is....how many cards do we have in the game in this format that can nuke the field completely with the exception of itself?

When you consider Dark World and the lack of Dark Hole...this big fella is extremely tempting.

The simple fact of the matter is people play the same type of Water Deck over and over. Everyone wants to abuse Umi, when Umiirika will get your non-sack Water Monsters just as high in a lot of cases. I've tried building outside if Umi/A Legendary Ocean and it's been refreshing. There are other combos out there that don't require Umi to be on the field.

AGreed there are certainly other options. My intention with the current deck though is to try to out muscle the Monarchs that seem to be so abundant in tournament play in my area lately.

If only Michizure could not miss it's timing =P

Interesting idea English Chef....with all that are depending on those effect tribute monsters that would throw a monkey wrench into the works.

Raging Flame Sprite[/ycard]]Hm, thats true. Problem is Mask of Restrict wouldn't be able to last long.

Up to a point. Bear in mind that the opponent can't use Mobius to destroy it as Mask of Restrict prevents its tribute summon.
Other options exist, but generally the opponent will be wanting to spend their Dust Tornados/MST on taking out ALO as a major threat, follwed by taking out f/d cards in the hope that they are sakaretsu armour or Mirror Force.

Actully in the last couple of weeks I've seen a lot LESS S/T removal by means of S/T cards. People seem to be opting out the Dust Tornados in favor of tech. like Jar of Greed / Bottomless in hopes of catching their opponent's Mobius and chaining making the usual hand advantage gain useless.
