Dear Judges,

The Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG National Championships will be held at the Origins
International Game Expo 2005 on July 2-3, 2005. The UDE Judge
Certification Program will be offering sponsorship for this event to a
limited number of judges. This is a phenomenal chance to improve your
judging skills and to work with some of the most talented judges and
players in the industry.

If you are interested in applying for sponsorship, please email
judge@upperdeck.com with the subject line, "Sponsorship for Yu-Gi-Oh!
Nationals 2005."

This sponsorship opportunity will be open from Friday, May 13, 2005,
through Friday, May 27, 2005. No sponsorship applications will be
accepted after 11:59 pm on May 27, 2005.

There are two types of sponsorship, Full and Partial. If you only need
airfare or only need hotel accommodations, please indicate that in your
email. This will increase your chances of receiving partial sponsorship.

Full Sponsorship: Upper Deck Entertainment covers the full cost of your
airfare and hotel for the duration of the event.

Partial Sponsorship: Upper Deck Entertainment covers the full cost of
EITHER your airfare OR your hotel for the duration of the event.

If you are selected for sponsorship, a UDE staff member will contact you
between June 6, 2005 and June 10, 2005 to let you know the type of
sponsorship you have received and to arrange travel to the event.

Application Requirements

* Level 2 Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG rules certification.
* Expertise in current Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG rules.
* Proficiency with current UDE Tournament Policies.
* Must be 18 years of age or older, for liability reasons.
* Ability to work long hours with minimal breaks. Most days will
be at least twelve hours long.
* Ability to assist event staff with duties other than judging,
including tournament area maintenance, player registration, side event
logistics, game demos, and so on.

General Information

* The Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG National Championship will be held from July
2-3, 2005 at the Origins International Game Expo 2005 in Columbus, OH.
* Last Chance Qualifiers will be held on Friday, July 1. Sponsored
judges will be expected to judge at these events.
* We are looking for judges who have excellent player management
skills, in addition to a baseline of rules knowledge.
* If you are not available to judge on Friday, July 1, you may
still be considered for sponsorship.
* A judge may be scheduled for work outside of the Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG
area. Talented judges are needed for side events, particularly on Friday
and Sunday.
* The dress code is black and white UDE judge shirt, black slacks,
and black shoes. If you do not have a UDE judge shirt, a shirt will be
provided for you at the event at no cost.
* If you are not selected to receive sponsorship for this event,
please do not be discouraged. We receive hundreds of applications and
only require a very small number of judges. If you continue to work hard
and advance your skills, you will most certainly be chosen for a future
event.
* If you are not selected to receive sponsorship but still wish to
volunteer at this event, please send an email to judge@upperdeck.com
with the subject line, "Judge Volunteer for the Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG National
Championships 2005."

Include the Following in Your Email

Please email judge@upperdeck.com with the subject line, "Sponsorship for
the Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG National Championships 2005." The following should be
included in the body of the email:

* Name
* Date of birth (mm/dd/yyyy)
* UDE Number
* Days you are available to work
* Email address
* Mailing address (street, city, state, ZIP, country if from
outside the United States)
* Phone number
* Events you regularly judge
* Any special requirements (hotel, flight, food, disabilities, and
so on)

If You Are Selected For Sponsorship

* Judges will have to provide a signed copy of the judge waiver
prior to attending this tournament.
* Judges are expected to act in a professional manner at all
times, and any judge not doing so will be asked to leave the venue
immediately.
* Judges will need a credit card to cover incidental expenses at
the hotel (room service, movies, laundry, and so on.)
* Judges will cover their own transportation to the airport and
hotel.
* Judges may be assigned to share a room with one other judge.
* Judges may not have friends, spouses, players, or volunteers
stay in their rooms for liability reasons.
* Judges will pay any changes to the hotel or flight schedule that
cost more than the original purchase price.
* Many judges may wish to take the advanced level Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG
Rules Knowledge Exam. While we will try to rotate judges so that they
are able to take this exam, no judge is guaranteed a chance to take the
exam at this event.
* Bring comfortable shoes and socks.
* Be prepared to work very hard for the duration of the event.

If you have any questions regarding this email, please email
judge@upperdeck.com.

Sincerely,

Ian Estrin

I was thinking about partial sponsorship, since I know a group of guys who are going, but riding with them and staying someplace else, or flying up and then staying with them, both seemed like too much of an invitation to get stranded somewhere. It'll be fun if I make it in though, and if not, I get a long 4th of July weekend.

I applied... I'd sort of need full sponsorship since I'm broke.

I do know people going up there but I'd have to travel out of my way just to meet up with them so I could ride with them, costing me more money in the end anyways. I'm not too sure how my chances are as far as getting accepted are. I kinda see things thing being more like a lottery where they just choose names at random sometimes, *Shrugs* Oh well.

If I'm not chosen then I'll most likely still try to make my way up there some how since there is a VS 10K that same weekend.

Do you still have a full CS deck with Beatdowns and all?

Yeah, I still have a full CS deck with Beatdowns and all, trying to figure out how to fit a Have A Blast! into it right now though (without having to take out 1 of the 4 Beatdowns... but I've already gone down in numbers on Overloads to 3 and Nasty Surprises... so why not I guess?)

I have a CS deck which is pretty much complete except for 4 Micro-Sentinels, 1 Hounds, and some other commons, but chances are I won't get time to play at the 10K. I was hoping that someone could play the deck that cost me about $150 to make ;)

Anyway, starting to get a little off-topic so I'm going to create an Origins thread right now, so its easier for people to discuss things.

I was definitely turned down. I got that email today.

But, I have an invite to judge through a different channel. We'll see if that comes through or not.

I got turned down as well.

Unless I can come up with at least $200 between now and that weekend, I most likely won't be going. Which is a bummer since I had wanted to play the 10K there if I hadn't recieved sponsorship to judge.

I got turned down too, and so did Steve Okegawa. I'm still mulling over whether to go up there to play, but I'll try again for sponsorship for Gencon Indy.

Wow!! Bishop AND Kenjiblade got turned down???? I'm glad I didnt ask for a sponsorship now!! I really dont see what the criteria was that they followed to approve/disapprove Judges.

Well, one theory is that they had enough people who wanted partial sponsorship that they had enough qualified judges without having to offer that many full sponsorships. I thought about going for partial, but that meant sharing a motel room with 9 other guys. *shudder*

I haven't recieved a response yet, I'll take that as good news at this point.

As with any company I'm sure UDE tries to keep costs down as much as possible too. As was mentioned if they could fill the positions needed with partial sponsorship or simply a badge provided and keep the quality of the judges at a good level I'm sure they did so.

I've never known UDE to put more than two judges in a room btw <laffin>

Heh, I meant having UDE fly me up and then staying with the 9 guys from my store who are going up there. UDE is good with arrangements for their events though.

As I said before I applied for partial sponsorship. I have not received a response yet either. I emailed to see if we did not receive a response meant no sponsorship. My reply was "replies will be sent 6/13 and 6/14". This is different dates from first listed in the email. The reason I asked is I am trying to plan a business trip"real job" to Puebla, Mexico and I needed to know if I have to come back on the 30th of June to make ends meet. It would be nice to know one way or the other.
