LON-EN064 Bazoo the Soul-Eater

"I summon Bazoo the Soul-Eater. Since I have priority, I activate Bazoo the Soul-Eater's effect to remove Jinzo and Dark Magician of Chaos from my graveyard boosting Bazoo's attack to 2200. Any response? No? Alright, now I activate my face down trap card, Return from the Different Dimension, paying half of my life points, any response? No? Alright, I'll special summon Jinzo and Dark Magician of Chaos. I'll return Nobleman of Crossout to my hand from my graveyard from Dark Magician of Chaos's effect and activate Nobleman of the Crossout clearing your side of the field of monsters. Any response? I attack with Bazoo the Soul-Eater for 2200, now with Jinzo for 2400, and finally with Dark Magician of Chaos for 2800 for a total of 7400"¦.that's game."

Bazoo the Soul-Eater has a bit of a torrid past. This monster in the days of beatdown decks was a valued friend that was widely played. When Bazoo first hit the scene the ruling was that you could remove ANY card from the graveyard to boost his attack. Once that ruling changed to only being able to remove monsters to boost his attack he was tucked away in most people's binders.

Since that time, cards that are able to return monsters from the removed from play area have been introduced. We'll look at some of those later in this series of card reviews. Most players have forgotten about Bazoo, but wait, Bazoo is a beast, as I'm sure all of you well know the Beastdown deck has gotten considerably nastier recently.

At 1600 attack Bazoo by itself isn't all that impressive. Given the effect of Bazoo the Soul-Eater though it's attack can be boosted to 2500, that's enough to stand nose to nose with any 5 star monster made. Bazoo's effect can be used once per turn making a number of deadly combos possible. If you have a Enraged Battle Ox on the field then Bazoo the Soul Eater can become a 2500 attack monster with piercing battle damage.

In a beast deck it's not hard to put monsters in the graveyard. Hyenas, Nimble Momongas, and Bubonic Vermin. These monsters all help keep field presence, are good tribute fodder, and thin out the deck.. Graceful Charity is obviously a great way to put monsters in the graveyard as well. All of these create an opportunity for Bazoo the Soul Eater to take advantage of not only boosting it's atk stats but setting up a rush of monsters when combined with Return from the Different Dimension or Dimension Fusion.

One thing to keep in mind when dealing with monsters that have been removed from play is that most monsters that can't be special summoned from the graveyard indeed CAN be special summoned from the removed from play area. This means monsters such as Dark Ruler Ha Des can make a special appearance. The other thing to realize is that monster effects are reset when removed from play with the exception of Twin-Headed Behemoth.

Card Text
You can remove up to 3 Monster Cards in your Graveyard from play to increase the ATK of this monster by 300 points for each card removed from play until the end of your opponent's next turn. This effect can only be used once during your turn.

Rulings

1. If you remove Monster Cards from your Graveyard to increase the ATK of "Bazoo the Soul-Eater", then on your opponent's turn he uses "Change of Heart" to gain control of the same "Bazoo the Soul-Eater", your opponent can remove cards from his Graveyard to further increase the ATK. The ATK increase you caused will end during that End Phase, and the ATK increase your opponent caused will end during your End Phase.

2. Removing Monster Cards from the Graveyard is a cost of "Bazoo the Soul-Eater"'s effect, so if your opponent chains to the activation of this effect with "Call of the Haunted", to Special Summon "Kycoo the Ghost Destroyer", the effect of "Bazoo the Soul-Eater" is not negated since the Monster Cards were already removed.

3.[Re: Necrovalley] "Necrovalley" negates costs and effects that require removing cards from the Graveyard. So "Necrovalley" WILL prevent a player from removing cards in the Graveyard from play to activate the effect of "Bazoo the Soul-Eater" or "Chaosrider Gustaph". "Necrovalley" WILL prevent a player from removing cards in the Graveyard from play to Special Summon "Dark Necrofear" or "Black Luster Soldier - Envoy of the Beginning". "Necrovalley" WILL negate card effects like "Big Burn", "Gravedigger Ghoul", "Disappear", and "Soul Release".

4. [Re: Skill Drain] If your opponent uses "Bazoo the Soul-Eater"'s effect to increase its ATK, and you use "Skill Drain", "Bazoo the Soul-Eater"'s ATK returns to normal, even if "Skill Drain" is destroyed after resolving. If "Skill Drain" is negating "Bazoo the Soul-Eater"'s effect, you can still pay the cost and remove monsters in your Graveyard from play, but "Bazoo the Soul-Eater"'s ATK will not increase.

with the onset of Rescue Cat, Hyena, and such its incredibly easy to swarm the field, with Bazoo leading the charge.

I have to admit, though, its been a while since Ive used the Soul Eater. last time was before the current ban and I was the unlucky recipient of one of those Change of Heart + direct attack from my own Bazoo.-_- *good grief* Ive been thinking about rebuilding a beast deck since having found a 2nd Wild Nature's Release. Bazoo would almost certainly be a headliner in that.

BTW- In case no one has told you, Mr. D., I really appreciate you taking the time to put the pertinent rulings at the end of your reviews. it helps me a lot in getting a clearer picture (on cards I know and dont know)

i used to run this in a eath beatdown, with gia power active he can be a 3000 alk 4 star drop combo with reture from of a dif diament or diamential fusion, he can be a god :)
