Is Makyura the Destoyer's effect optional or not if it isn't please explain to me why, thnx.

This is the Card Text for Makyura the "Destructor", not Destroyer....

During the turn this card is sent to the Graveyard, the owner of this card can activate Trap Card(s) from his/her hand.

That small three letter word makes it "optional".

It's a yes and no on this card.

You are correct in that you don't have to activate Trap Card(s) from your hand during the turn he's sent to the Graveyard.

HOWEVER, his effect of setting up a new game state is mandatory. This was made official by an E-mail I got from Curtis Schultz.

On one of the "Peten the Dark Clown" questions, he had initially mentioned "Makyura the Destructor" as an optional effect and said it was ruled similarly to "Archfiend of Gilfer" and "Pinch Hopper." However, he retracted that later as an edit to the message. When I asked him about it, here's what I got back:

It is not an Optional Trigger effect.

But this does not answer the question. How can a card be both an Optional effect and not. It makes no since. I'm not sure where the confusion is coming from, but Makyura's effect cannot setup a mandatory state simply because a player may not wish to simply set a trap [given it they are able to set spells or traps that turn] instead of activating one in which case, if it where mandatory the opponent or official of a match would have to check the set card which is just weird.

I mean the card itself lets us know its an optional effect. I've seen the post from the link you gave and it doesn't say anything contrary to Makyura being optional.

The state that is created by "Makyura the Destroyer" is not optional. When he is sent to the graveyard, the owner can activate Trap Cards from his hand. That part of the effect is the "manditory" part.

The "optional" part is up to the player who owned Makyura. He has the choice to play trap cards from his hand (to use the state that the effect created), but he doesn't have to.

So what we are looking at are two effects, essentially. The first Actually being that Makyura setsup the condition to play Traps. This is the main effect and therefore is not optional. I am getting this correct?

OK,,, How EXACTLY does he work.... can you activate trap cards as if they were Quickplay spells (on your opponents turn), or only on your turn???????

thanks

Ok, I understand how to use him once he's activated - but what I want to know is what are eligible triggers for his effects (i.e. Sending to the graveyard via Divine Wrath, Painful Choice, Magic Jammer, etc.) What can you do to send him there and what CAN'T you do to send them and get his effect?

You can use the effect of "Makyura the Destructor" at any time he is sent to the graveyard.

The ruling for him is not the same as the rulings for "Peten the Dark Clown" and "Archfiend of Gilfer".
