just to make sure.

if i have a mystic swordman lv4 and attack and destroy a monster card, do i have to "forcefully" make his effect?. in other words, do i have to summon the next level (lv 6) of mystic swordsman?. what happens if i dont have that card?...do i still send the mystic swordsman lv to the graveyard, even if i dont have the next level?

and to make 2 questions for the price of one, how can i identify the "mandatory" and "optional" of an effect by looking at the text?.

No, you don't have to use the effect of Leveling him up. But remember, if you do not choose to use the effect the same turn he is eligible, the effect will 'dissapear' until you complete the requirements again, i.e. destroying a monster as a result of battle.

If you choose to use the effect and you don't have the next level monster available, the effect 'dissapears' or 'resolves without effect'.

For the most part, the "optional" effects usually say "can", although the LV monsters don't seem to follow that standard.

If your Mystic Swordsman Lv4 attacks a face-down monster, the effect is manditory and it will destroy the face-down monster without going to damage calculation.

If that happens, you do not meet the condition of destroying 1 monster as a result of battle, the monster was destroyed by an effect.

Which means you don't Level Up!

The Level monsters follow the standard of Cannon Soldier:
Tribute 1 monster on your side of the field to inflict 500 points of damage to your opponent's Life Points.

The bolded part is the activation cost, the underlined part is the effect. It's the same with level monsters.

Horus the Black Flame Dragon LV4
Effect Monster (Dragon / FIRE / 4 Stars / ATK 1600 / DEF 1000)

As long as this card remains face-up on your side of the field, control of this card cannot switch. During the End Phase of a turn that this card destroyed a monster as a result of battle, send this card to the Graveyard to Special Summon 1 "Horus the Black Flame Dragon LV6" from your hand or Deck.

The italics, this time, is the condition of activation.

thks for putting this up, but now im confused again....does the effect of level monsters, when the have legaly achieved their "summoning their next leve", is mandatory?
