Mefist the Infernal General DCR-066 / DB1-EN228

Card Name:
Mefist the Infernal General
Sources:
DCR-066 (Rare), DB1-EN228 (Common)
Stats:
Effect Monster Fiend / DARK / 5 Stars / ATK 1800 / DEF 1700

Text:
When this card attacks with an ATK that is higher than the DEF of your opponent's Defense Position monster, inflict the difference as Battle Damage to your opponent's Life Points. When this card inflicts Battle Damage to your opponent's Life Points, discard 1 card randomly from your opponent's hand.

Rulings:
[Re: Magical Thorn] The effect of "Magical Thorn" is applied when the opponent discards during the End Phase to make their hand size 6, discarding for the cost of cards such as "Tribute to the Doomed", "Cost Down", or "Judgment of Anubis", and discarding for card effects such as "Delinquent Duo", "Confiscation", "Robbin' Goblin", "Morphing Jar" and "Mefist the Infernal General".

Comments:
He's VERY slow. But Mefist, single handedly sometimes, has won me so many duels that I almost feel guilty only THINKING about taking him out of my deck. Why is Mefist so deadly? Because your opponent BETTER be ready to attack him. Setting a monster face-down is asking for trouble. A lot of people say "1800ATK for 1 tribute?!?! No Way!!! That's too weak!" And they are mostly right. However, a player running Mefist and/or concentrating on Mefist's effect, will USE his 1800ATK to their fullest advantage. How? Have the Damage Step be full of surprises for them. Make the Damage Step be FULL of goodies like Rush Recklessly and Energy Drain. Blast With Chain and Mirror Wall. Curse of Aging and Bark Of Dark Ruler After 2 rounds of this, they've lost 2 monsters on the field, plenty of Life Points and 2 cards in their hand, but more importantly, Mefist's PSYCHOLOGICAL damage will be irreparable. Your opponent will be SO afraid to attack and yet, they will know that placing monsters in defense mode won't help much either.

Strengths:
Single Tribute.

Has trample effect.

Has hand thinning effect when does battle damage, which comes "free" when going against face down mosnters.

Weaknesses:
Mediocre ATK for a single tribute monster.

Combos:
Last Will + Mefist Tribute + Winged Minion = 2500 Mefist beater.
Mefist + Ballista of Rampart Smashing = 3300 trampler.
Tribute Mefist for Byser Shock + Puppet Magic of Dark Ruler = Opening the doors for Mefist's grand return.

that combo also just destroys your hand and field presence, for a reward of what? one card from opponent's hand and a monster removal.
After the 8400 thousand damage, do you need any more reward?

Seeing as how you have to switch their Ojama tokens into attack mode for the combo to work, yes, yes you do.

what chaosruler said....I had a difficult time believing that the combo would work consistently, and you would need to attack or be attacked 3 times.

Most of the time, in a matchup, drawing cards > discarding cards. Limiting the opponent's options is great, but giving yourself more options is better just because if the opponent slows you down, then the discard won't do much. 3:1, 3:2 hand size matchups, I would rather take the +1 from airknight rather than the -1 to opponent from mefist. The trinity of Mefist, Hades, and Jinzo is just too hard to field, and if you do, there aren't any guarrantees that you can keep control.

i can prove other wise judicator.

its not as far fetched as it is, getting Jinzo/ air/ soldier on the field.

the soldier may be special summoned, but the odd of getting all 3 is the same as getting the dark version of it.

and when it works, you wished the top deck was a vortex.

and half the time you dont even have a hand to want to get a vortex your looking more for a Snatch Steal or Brain Control.

but in the end your left handless, and your opponents field precense is just too much to handle.

ask the people ive played against and how many times ive had that control.

its really twisted, especially if you have to play against a conservative Ben kai deck.

The Staunch/Ojama combo would probably work best if you had a Zero Gravity or Final Attack Orders put into the mix. As mentioned before, Staunch doesn't force defense position monsters into attack position, so the combo is slightly misleading. Then again, this thread is a little old and we were still getting grips on a few of the mechanics 8^D

Similarly, the Zero Gravity tactic is nice too when going on the offensive, just before the Mefist summoning. If you're building a Mefist style deck, I'd definitely plan for this combo. Mefist was starting to see a lot more action in recent times due to the Goat abuse going on. Now that Scapegoat is getting limited, I think he may go back into the archives a bit except for the fiend loyal 8^D
