More Targeting Questions

1) Is there a difference between targeting and specifically designating?

2) Is Penguin soldier's effect a targeting effect, and can I activate the effect of my Shadowknight Archfiend to try to negate the effect?

1. Nope, no difference. "Specifically designates this card" means when it is targeted. If a card does not target then it does not specifically designate that card.

2. You bet.

1. No

2. Yes, Penguin Soldier does target. If Penguin Soldier desginated your Shadowknight Archfiend, you can use the effect of Shadowknight Archfiend and roll the dice. My memory is faint, but i believe you must roll "3" on the roll to negate the effect.

Well...Actually you sometimes Target but you don't Specifically Designate. Penguin Soldier/Dark Cat/Mobius/etc target more than one card, so you don't "Specifically Desigante" a card. However, if there is one (and ONLY one) target to the effect, you are Specifically Designating...:D

DimensionalWarrior has some very valid points here. I remember seeing Kevin posting something to this nature on the old judge's list. I'll see if I can find it.

"specifically designate" means literally to "specifically set aside"

It has absolutely nothing to do with the number of targets, only that you are "setting aside" one or more targets at activation of an effect.

In all cases of targeting you are specifically designating, whether its one or more targets.

More specific examples:

Great Dezard said:
As long as this card remains face-up on the field, negate the activation and effects of all Spell and Trap Cards that specifically designate this card as a target and destroy them.
This effect will negate and destroy a Spell or Trap Card that targets more than one card.

Negate the effect of a Monster Card that specifically designates this 1 card as a target.
This effect will only negate a Monster Effect that targets it and only it.

I know what you are referring to. However that discussion was regarding an effect that stated on the card that it negated an effect that specifically designate one monster. In that case, if Penquin Soldier targeted 1 monster, the effect could be negated but if it targeted 2 then it could not. It was not saying there was a difference between targeting and specifically designating. It was just pointing out the distinction between specifically designating ONE target and targeting multiple targets.

Thanks Spot's Knight!....I couldn't find it. I'm glad you remembered it! So much information lost from those old judge's list rulings and discussions <grumble>
