RIP Jacob KT 2/16/06
Neo-Spacian Grand Mole
STON-EN005 (Effect Monster)
[If this card attacks or is attacked by an opponent's monster, you can return both monsters to their owners' hands at the start of the Damage Step (without damage calculation).]

This effect activates in the Damage Step, before a face-down monster is flipped face-up. (Therefore, this effect will not activate if a face-down "Neo-Spacian Grand Mole" is attacked. Also, if "Neo-Spacian Grand Mole" attacks a face-down Flip Effect Monster, you can return both monsters to the owners' hands without activating the Flip Effect.)

I thought the first thing to happen in the damage step is any face down monsters being attacked get fliped face up. can someone please clarify?

Card effects Like Sasuke Samurai/Paladin of White Dragon activate before the monster is flipped face up.

This is an old ruling. See:

"¢ If "Sasuke Samurai" attacks a face-down monster, apply its effect after entering the Damage Step, but before flipping up the face-down monster. The monster is not flipped. Flip Effects are not activated. Monsters like "Kisetai" and "Giant Axe Mummy" do not activate their effects.

The Damage Step begins when both players have aggreed to enter it, when neither player has any more chains to activate/resolve for the Battle Step. The damage Step has its own time frame within the Battle Phase. Several actions can be taken before the card is Flipped Face up. For instance, your Sasuke Samurai's effect can go off, and I Chian Divine Wrath. Now your SS is destroyed, and my Monster remains safe and unflipped.

you can't chaine divine wrath to a continous effect such as sasuke samurai
You wanna re-read the rulings for "Divine Wrath"....
UDE FAQ said:
You can activate "Divine Wrath" against "Sasuke Samurai" or "Mystic Swordsman LV2" when they attack a face-down Defense Position monster.

what? why do they keep changing their minds?!!

the rulings on divine wrath still say that you can not chain to a continous effect, so I'm assuming they decided that mystic swordsman/sasuke samurai aren't continous but triggered effect?

while their at it why don't they do the same thing to goblin attack force/goblin elite attack force?!

So the bottom line here is that Neo-Spacian Grand Mole must be face up for it's effect to activate as it is a triggered effect. If Grand Mole is face down and flipped face up after being attacked you're already into substep 2 of the Damage Step and as such, Grand Mole's effect won't trigger. The effect allows both cards to be returned at the START of the Damage Step, not somewhere in-between substeps.

This is where Ceasefire and Desert Sunlight come in handy. Your opponent knows you would never place Mole F/D, so he attacks..... Surprise!! Heh, Heh, Heh.
