New game mechanic for equips?!

Greets all,

I was in another forum, where a memeber, who indicated they were a part of the Demo Team, indicated that the mechanic has changed so that if a monster is destroyed as a result of battle, any equip cards equipped to it are also destroyed.

To my knowledge they are only sent to the graveyard when the monster is destroyed. The only time the equip is destroyed is if the monster is flipped into face down position, due to a card effect.

Is this new mechanic true? If so...Dark Necrofear got even meaner! 8^D

Well, there was discussion with Elma as well, but according to the same posting, Elma wouldn't be affected because of the text where it says "When equipped"...

yeah since there are equips that have special effects when they are destroyed themselves (Black Pendant).  If the monster is destroyed then the owner of Black Pendant tries to say they inflict 500 damage to the opponent when it goes to the graveyard.

EDIT: Just found this on the Card Registry. Nevermind on this example. "When this card is sent from the field to the Graveyard, inflict 500 points of Direct Damage to your opponent's Life Points."

I'm still waiting to hear back from the UDE Judges List for final confirmation. Unless there is somebody else in here with some higher contacts that can clue us in 8^D

A Monster Destroyed as a Result of Battle or Magic Effect is not Destroying the Equip Spell Card (See Butterfly Dagger-Elma Ruling)

This Came Up Because of the Elma Dagger and has now been clearified

Well, I think I need to keep Necrofear out of my questions since it always seems to immediately augment the responses 8^D

Here is the response I got back from Curtis Schultz:

"Dark Necrofear" wasnt destroyed by a card effect your opponent controls. It was destroyed by a game mechanic.

No help for her.

So I understand I jumped the gun again, given Necrofear's wording, but the response also seems to "indirectly" answer the question that the new mechanic is in play. I asked for confirmation on the mechanic, but no response, so we continue 8^D

Well, according to a recent judge list post, if you have a card equipped to a monster, and the monster is destroyed, the equip card is also destroyed (BUT, it is considered destroyed by a game mechanic), so effects like "Dark Necrofear" (must be destroyed by card EFFECT) and "Blast With Chain" (must be destroyed by card EFFECT) would NOT happen because they were destroyed by a game mechanic, NOT by a card effect.

With "Book of Moon", I was wondering if the equip would be sent to the graveyard or destroyed.

With this new/revised mechanic, I'm leading towards the side that it will be destroyed (by a game mechanic, not card effect).

EDIT: You can find the post over here.

Ways an Equip is DESTROYED: MST, Blowback Dragon, Feather Duster, H Storm, Dust Tornado, Raigeki Break, Gearfreed the Iron Knight

Ways an Equip is SENT NOT DESTROYED: Monster Equipped is Destroy (Via a Trap, Spell, Monster Effect, or Battle) Woodland Sprite, Zero Type Spell Crusher, Or an Effect that says "SEND Spell Card from field to Graveyard"

Is that clear enough for you?

Incorrect.

With the 'new' game mechanic, if a monster gets destroyed/sent to the graveyard/flipped face down, any card(s) equipped to it are now considered destroyed, however, they are not considered destroyed by a card effect, they are considered destroyed by the game mechanic.

This was addressed by the judge list very recently, and you can find the post over here.

More specifically, I quote from Curtis' post:

Not quite.

"Dark Necrofear" was not destroyed by an opponent's card effect, so there is no
reason its effect would activate.

It was an Equip Spell Card that was destroyed because its target was turned face-down.

Now, you may be thinking, "Woah, doesn't this make 'Butterfly Dagger-Elma' ALOT more powerful?"

The answer is "No".

Butterfly Dagger-Elma
Equip Spell
A monster equipped with this card increases its ATK by 300 points. When this card is destroyed and sent to the Graveyard while equipped to a monster, this card can be returned to the owner's hand.

Since "Butterfly Dagger-Elma" is no longer equipped to the monster when the monster was destroyed, you would NOT get the effect.

My good friend...the correct ruling is on the Judges List (did you not see the link I gave?).

Whether you like it or not, that is what we must go by.

Even though it causes no (if not little) change, this is the ruling now.

...and that's what I'm trying to get to the bottom of. I'm aware of how things used to be played, I've heard rumors for the longest time about the new mechanic, I just haven't found a solid "Hey this is a new mechanic to how the game is played" posting, except for some enforcements (actually I think your link is to my original question I asked the judges list 8^D). I guess I'm too anal or something 8^D

Really not a new mechanic. Just a terminology change for no better reason than to change it. At some point it came up that we "Sent" and the OCG "Destroyed" equip cards when they didn't have a valid target. But the mechanic was not changed, just the wording.

Well said by all....

..I didn't realize that this would result in so many posts. Then again maybe that's just it, if certain issues aren't clarified as well over in the UDE judges thread, then they result in more confusion. I think I wound up stirring up some additional chaos over there, which was never intended.

My humble apologies to you all for any headache this has caused.
