Question about Night Assailant. The card ways "When this card is sent directly from your hand to the Graveyard, return 1 Flip Effect Monster from your Graveyard to your hand. "

Can I just discard this card to the grave yard and us it's effect or must it used with (ie: Magic jammer, Monster Recar)

Thanks

It has to be discarded or sent from the hand to the graveyard by a card effect. Also, please post YGO Rules questions in the YGO Rules forum. I have moved this thread there.

That's debateable. The ruling states:

1. "Night Assailant" doesn't have to be sent to the Graveyard by an effect, or by an effect controlled by your opponent; it just has to be sent to the Graveyard.

It can be send to the Graveyard by an effect (controlled by you or your opponent) and in the End Phase when you got 7 or more cards.

When it's send to the Graveyard by an effect that effect (or the whole chain) resolves and Night Assailant starts a new chain.

That ruling does not mean to insinuate that Night Assailant can send itself to the Graveyard. It means to clarify that any thing that sends it to the Graveyard can trigger its effect, whether that be a cost effect, a discard at the End Phase because your hand limit is too large, or what-have-you.

"When this card is sent directly from your hand to the Graveyard..." is distinctly different from something like Thunder Dragon which reads "Discard this card from your hand to the Graveyard..." Night Assailant is waiting for something to trigger it's efffect. Thunder Dragon must be manually activated.

Masterwoo was just clarifying that Night Assailant does not need to be discarded by "card effect" to trigger it's effect. As someone new may have interpreted from the previous answer. Night Assailant has no restrictions on circumstances regarding it being discarded (it simply needs to go from hand to the graveyard and then will activate). Neither does it contain an effect that would allow it to be discarded in order to trigger it's effect. In hand it has no effect and must wait to be sent to the graveyard by game mechanic, card effect, etc. in order to activate. That's pretty much it in a nutshell.

Thanks anthonyj. That's pretty much what I was saying, as it did seem to point to "only" an effect could send him to the Graveyard.
