I'm trying to understand the concept of Timing. The only information I can find is on the UDE site but I'm not understanding what they are saying...can someone please simplify this for me? Preferably with examples :D

Thnx in advance

Missing the Timing - Optional Trigger Effects Added June 2005
[font=Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]Sometimes a Trigger Effect says that "when" a condition happens, you "can" activate its effect. In this case, you are only allowed to activate the effect when the condition being met was the last thing to happen in the game (activating cards & effects that haven't resolved yet doesn't count).

If the triggering condition happened for an optional Trigger Effect, but something else has happened after that, then you have "missed the timing" and you cannot activate it. For example, this can happen if the optional Trigger Effect monster was Tributed for a Tribute Summon or to activate a card effect, or if the triggering condition happened in a chain and wasn't Chain Link 1, or if another card effect or game effect has happened since then. The triggering condition has to be the very last thing that happened in order for a "when"¦ you can" optional Trigger Effect to activate.

Note that Trigger Effects can be found on Spell & Trap Cards as well as Monster Cards.

Well, I wont write a long essay here but give some hints.

Each trigger effect has an event it responds to. These events are refered to as 'things' in this game. The are also some activated cards that respond to such events.
Some events are: summon, attack, drawing cards, discarding, sending cards from X to Y.
Such activated effects and optional trigger effects only work if the last event was that they respond to.

e.g. Sangan (mandatory) vs Peten the Dark Clown (optional) when tributed.
1) I tribute Sangan for Beast of Talwar.
- Sangan was tributed and sent to the grave.
- Beast of Talwar was summoned.
The last event is the summon, not Sangan sent to the grave. Will Sangan work? Yes, because it is mandatory.
2) I tribute Peten for Beast of Talwar
- Peten was tributed and sent to the grave.
- Beast of Talwar was summoned.
The last thing is not Peten sent to the grave, therefore you cant activate its effect - it misses the timing.

e.g. Dark World monsters with secondary effects.
3) My opponent plays Confiscation and discards my Sillva.
- Sillva is special summoned.
- 2 cards from the opponent's hand are put on the bottom of his deck.
The last thing was not the summon, so an optional trigger effect that responds to such a summon, like Card of Safe Return will miss the timing. An activated card like Bottomless Trap Hole that is an activated card not a trigger, but still needs a certain event to occur cant be activated either.

Hope it's enough detail for you. Others might write some more examples.

Bottomless Trap Hole can only be activated when the last thing to happen(=the last event) is the summon of a monster.

In example 3) the last thing was the returning of 2 cards to the bottom of the deck, therefore you cant activate BTH to destroy Sillva.

4) Your opponent has Dark Magician Girl on the field and you have Zaborg and a face-down BTH. Your opponent activates Magical Dimension.
At resolution:
- Your opponent tributes 1 monster.
- Your opponent special summons Dark Magician from his hand.
- Your opponent decides to use the optional part of the effect and selects and destroys your Zaborg.

The last thing to happen was? Zaborg was destroyed (and sent to the grave). So you cant activate BTH to destroy and remove Dark Magician.

5) Appropriate can only be activated when the last thing to happen is your opponent drawing cards outside of his draw phase.
e.g. He plays Graceful Charity.
- he draws 3 cards.
- he discards 2 cards.
The last thing was discarding, so you cant activate Appropriate.

PS: I tried to green/bold the events.
