Power up question??

are power ups only considered when you discard a card of the same name to increase its attack and defense of a card on the field? Or is playing nasty surprise and savage beatdown also considered a power up?

Powerups occur when you discard a copy of the same character, or use an effect that powers up. Savage Beatdown, etc. are just attack modifiers

Note that Power-up is only for this ATTACK, not this turn, if your opponent stops you with some means and when you attack again with this character, you do not get the 'modifier'.

ok what about character that increase there attk and def like cosmic spiderman he gains +1/+1 attk and def for each non-stunned character my opponent controls. Now, effects like these are considered power ups right not attack modifiers???

When John mentions that a card effect he means cards like Tameran, which read "Power-Up target character", that's an effect that would power-up.

Everything else would just be a modifier.

i was thinking mainly of that new card, i think it's underworld, that can discard a character w/ a cost of 2 or less in order ot power up a def. or attacker you control, something like that

Black Mask and Harley Quinn also have effects that let you discard something else for a Power-Up, but both effects specifically call it a power-up. Not just a "+1 ATK/ +1 DEF" modifier.
