Question on continuous magic/traps

I am sure htis has been asked before, but I just want to be clear on how continuous magic and traps work in a chain. I have Call of the mummy on my side of the field. I activate its effect and my opponent chains MST. If I understand correctly, I loose my effect when Call is destroyed, even though MST does not have any negating ability? Is this correct?

You can also add Equip Spells to this category. They must also be face-up on the field when their effects resolve otherwise they "no workie". So you can MST "Premature Burial" or "Snatch Steal" and stop them cold.

It's also worth noting that by destroying one of these cards in a chain, you're not stopping the activation of the effect, you're preventing the resolution of the effect.

Actually you are not stopping the activation of the card, you are trying to prevent resolution of the card into play.

The "effect" is a whole other story, as there are many variations.

Actually, I would disagree with that. Case in point:

- I activate "Premature Burial" and must pay 800LP immediately as well as declare the monster in my Graveyard that is being targeted.

- You chain "Mystical Space Typhoon" and target my "Premature Burial"

The effect has indeed been activated here, since the monster has been targeted. By destroying "Premature Burial", you have prevented the resolution of the effect.

I suppose you could argue one way or another on the activation cost, though :D

In general, the point im trying to make is that there is a difference between "Card Activation" and "Effect Activation"...and its an important distinction that people need to understand. Sometimes they occur together... sometimes they dont.

Cards of a continuous nature, must resolve into play and be face-up in order for any effect to be achieved or resolve from them.

To use your Premature Burial example, lets compare that to Monster Reborn in the same situation.

~ Turn Player activates Monster Reborn

[TP Chain Link 1] Monster Reborn (target -> Gemini Elf)

~ Opponent chains with MST

[OP Chain Link 2] MST (target -> Monster Reborn)

MST destroys MR however the "effect" of MR still resolves and Gemini Elf is still Special Summoned.

The reason you dont Special Summon with PB is not because you stopped resolution of the "effect" but because you stopped resolution of the "card"... which indirectly prevents the "effect" from resolving.

Hope that helps
