Scapegoat vs. Torrential Tribute

Hey, guys.....I'm new to these forums, so, allow me to introduce myself.
My name is Ryan Joseph Rodriguez, but you can call me the New Era Outlaw (or NEO, for short). I've been a level 1 judge in Trinidad for some time now, as well as an avid duelist. It's great to be here, and nice to meet you guys.

Anyway, I have a question about two cards: Scapegoat and Torrential Tribute. The text of Scapegoat says 'Place 4 Sheep Tokens in defense position....' With that said, can you activate Torrential Tribute in response to the activation of Scapegoat? My argument there at that time was that this was an instance of a Special Summon, since four monster tokens were placed on the field by the effect of a Spell card, but, given the effects of cards such as 'Interdimensional Matter Transporter', which replaces the monster, not summons it, on the field at the end of the turn, I'm not so sure.
Meh. Call it ring rust for not referring to the rulings in a while.

Anyway, thanks for your help....

Firstly, welcome and i wish i could be there for Carnival boy! :)

Secondly, you are correct the "placing" of the Sheep Tokens is considered a Special Summon and is a legal trigger for Torrential Tribute.

Well Ryan I told u that as well, but I know u came here to clarify...so welcome anyway.

And Novastar, we know u wish u coulda been down here for Carnival... :p

Enough woman to drive any sane man mad! :)

Anytime a monster is summoned to the field by a Spell, Trap, or Monster Effect, it's generally a Special Summon and unless it was during the Damage Step, you can activate Torrential Tribute.

Thanks for the welcome and the advice, guys.

To be honest, that was my reasoning the whole time- the mere fact that you're placing monster tokens on the field via the effect of a Quick-Play Spell card is proof that it is a Special Summon.
At least now I know this with the utmost conviction.

Hey, SPK, don't forget to show me the ropes around here sometime, alright?
:)

It's an annoying way to use Torrential Tribute, but it can also come in handy if your opponent suspects it being down, and decides not to summon anything, or they have like 3 monsters out and don't need to summon anything, activating Scapegoat during their battle phase, then using Torrential Tribute on it is a good way to clear the field and save your skin for at least one more turn if nothing else, especially if they have any tramplers down.

If you want to be called NEO for short, why not pick Neo the Magic Swordsman as your avatar? ;)

It was confirmed about 5 mins after Scapegoat was released waaaaaaay back in 1949... ;)

Chill dude, my post was FYI for folk to follow up on. Sometimes it takes time for the penny to drop... I always assumed it was a special summon, and hadn't noticed the text was otherwise.
