Hello again everyone. Why was I an idiot for SJC Seattle? I ran a 65 card main deck. Why did I run it? I wanted to have fun and see how well a huge deck could do at a major tournament. Why do you ask? I didn't really care if I top 8'd again just as long as I played well and didn't make mistakes. I wanted to see if me playing my best was good enough to get in the top 50 or so with a huge deck. It wasn't. If I wanted to have a chance at top 8'ing; I should've ran a 40-42 card deck. The thing is though; this is just a hobby of mine and I had lots of fun. It was like a mini-vacation for me. If you don't understand why I didn't care about top 8'ing or running a huge deck; then we either disagree on a few things or you don't understand my way of thinking. Maybe some day you will be able to comprehend where I'm coming from. Anyway, on to the tourney.
My team founder Eddie Turks (ETurks from now on) and I met up at his mom's house (which is like 10 minute drive from the STL Airport). We make sure we have our online itinerary, all our cards, our YGO custom gear, clothes, and all of our luggage. When we check-in our non-carry on bags; we get our boarding pass and head down to the terminals. We find out we get the special treatment of a personal hand search of all of our items. At least they didn't strip search us. It takes them about 5 minutes to search us and our items and then we put all of our stuff back on. We go and find our terminal and find out that it will be a good hour before we take off. When we board we find out that we get to watch the movie "Lake House" which was actually an ok chic flic (believe me, take a girl to see that on a date if she hasn't yet; you might get rewarded). The flight was about 4 hours long and it was a great flight for my first airpline ride. Hardly any turbulence, a smooth takeoff, and an almost smoother landing. We aks the dude that was sitting next to us who was visiting Seattle to see his g/f how to get to baggage claim and our hotel; he lets us know where to go and actually shows us where our baggage claim is (I don't remember the flight attendants telilng us which baggage claim we had). We get our bags and head out to the parking garage and call our hotel. They send a shuttle out to get us. We get to the hotel and check-in, find out that the cheapest way to get to the tourney is by an all-day bus pass ($2.50), make sure we set our alarm for like 7 AM so that we have time for a shower, breakfast, and the bus to take us there. We at McDonald's for breakfast and then walked to the bus stop and talked to a lady about how long it will take us to get to the tourney area. She said it would probably take about 45 minutes (we know we have plenty of time). This bus takes us downtown where we have to get off of it and walk over a block to get on a different bus which takes us to the Seattle Center. We both get to see the Space Needle in prson for the first time; it is truely an awesome building. I wish we would've had more time to explore it unless that would've cost us a bunch of money. So we find the tourney place and register and write out our decklists. In the meantime I talk to Emon, Fili Luna, Austin Kulman, and a few other people who know me but I don't know them that well. I show people my custom playmat and most of them love it. A few people said that it was the best mat they've ever seen. I let them know where I got it airbrushed and show them my hat too and tell them where I got that done at.
In the meantime while we're still waiting for the player meeting, I meet Simon Choy (the head judge) and ask him what his ruling is on the Gearfried/Blast with Chain ruling during the damage step. It still is a pretty big argument online right now. Then I start walking around again and see a guy (I'm sorry Landon, but I forgot to ask you how old you are) in a motorized wheelchair. I introduce myself to him and tell him that I'm going to ask the judges to get him a special table/spot for him to duel at during the whole Shonen so that he doesn't have to work his way through the isles and move chairs out of the isles. He thought it was a good idea and I ask him his name; he tells me he is Landon Hall. I go to talk to Simon about it and let him know I have a question for him again; however, that this time it is about a fellow duelist. I told him about Landon's situation and he said "I didn't even see anyone in a wheelchair. Thank you very much and we will accomodate him well." I feel good now because I know that no matter how good or bad I do at the SJC; that I did something to help someone else out and hopefully made their day better. A little bit later the player meeting is announced. I meet Kenny So (I believe his last name is So) from CO; he's a pretty nice guy who tells me that he usually doesn't play in the Shonens. We wish each other good luck. Pairing are posted.
Round 1: Matt Stille (me) vs. Justin Wadsworth Table 5
I don't feel too excited about playing at such a high table in round 1; my highest table ever to start a Shonen. Justin is a kid who seemed to be around 11 or 12 years old. I find out that he is running a pretty bad E-Hero deck. Don't get me wrong, there are good E-Hero decks out there; but his needed a lot of work. I end up winning game one due to LLAB, Dream Clown, and my little monsters. He ends up scooping in game 2 because he doesn't believe he can beat me and I think he was very annoyed with how my deck ran against his.
Results: 1-0 Matches (2-0 duels)
Round 2: Me vs. Eric Ing (#1 in USA?) Table 51
I knew when I read Eric's name off of the pairings that he was good. I couldn't really place his name; but for some reason I knew he would have the upper hand on my 65 cards. We chat it up a bit and he lets me know he is #1 in the US right now. I'm a bit impressed, because that is hard to do even if you play everyday; it can't just all be luck that got him to #1. Game 1 he owns me with his Frog and Monarchs because I couldn't remove the Frogger from play. Game 2 we both side deck. He gets 2 of his 3 Wave-Motions and the only M/T removal I get is my MST (which is understandble). He shoots the 2nd WMC off for 6000 damage and wins a few turns later because of his Monarchs again. At least I lost in round 2 again; maybe it's a good sign, but I tend to think I might be wrong this time.
Results: 1-1 (2-2).
Round 3: Me vs. Nick Crouch Table 33
I'm not sure who Nick is and I'm not sure if he knew who I was until I set down my custom playmat. Game 1 he burns me down to 1000 LP and I Exiled his face down Mecha Dog Marron?? (the one that make you lose 1000 LP if it's destroyed by an effect) so I lose game 1. I now know he is running burn; so I side in my Jinzo and my beatdown monsters. Game 2 I happen to draw Jinzo early and Jinzo wins the match; because he draws mostly traps. Game 3 I ended up making a mistake. I'm at 2300 LP and he is at 2500 LP or so. I have Breaker and Gearfried on the field. He has no monsters but 1 set M/T. I have Bazoo in my hand and I think about summoning him for the guaranteed win but I second guess myself. Why? What if his face down is Torrential or Mirror Force? Then I probaly definitely lose with all the burn cards he has. So what do I do? I just attack with Gearfried and Breaker. His facedown ended up being Cylinder. I then realize I had game if I would've just took the risk. He then topdecks LLAB and sets a monster. I only have a Reaper to be able to attack with due to that LLAB. Next turn he topdecks Restructer Revolution for the game (I had 3 cads in hand).
Results: 1-2 (3-4)
Round 4: Me vs. Sean Moore Table 80
I don't remember too much of this match, sorry Sean. I think he 2-0'd me pretty easily just like Eric Ing.
Results: 1-3 (3-6)
Round 5: Me vs. Dalton Thompson Table 92
Dalton recognizes me and lets me know that this is his first Shonen. I believe him because his body language isn't lying to me. Game 1 I get down to like 300 LP because of using 2 MBaaS early. I finally pull out the win somehow mostly because he didn't draw very many beatdown monsters. I don't remember Game 2 very well, but he won pretty easily. Game 3 goes kind of long but I end up winning it but I still don't remember it very well. He was running a version of my Gearfried deck from Austin, except that he couldn't afford a lot of the higher end cards; so he had to settle for a lot less devastating cards in his deck. I hope he learned from his first Shonen; I know I did at mine.
Results: 2-3 (5-7)
Round 6: Me vs. Lee Bab**** Table 72
Lee was an older gentleman who plays wit his son. I believe he was running a machine build with at least 1 Stein in it. For some reason, everyone who I have played who is in their 40's or 50's (not sure how old Lee is but I assume he's at leat 40 something) tends to play slower than people who are younger. Game 1 lasts like 37 minutes or so. I left him keep his 4 sheep tokens on the field until I knew I had the win. I had 2 Patricians of Darkness, Spirit Reaper, and Des Lacooda on the field for a long time. His last turn he summons Stein (with the 4 tokens on the field) and realizes he can't activate Stein's effect. Since he says "Well, I already summoned Stein; I have to leave it out there now," I don't argue with him. Although, I did tell him that he can take it back if he wants to; but he says "No, I was the one who did the move, thanks anyway." Next turn I finally draw Heavy Storm. I ask him how many cards he has in hand, he has 2. I equip my 2 Smoke Grenades to his Stein. I have Premature equipped to Patrician and 1 set E-Controller. I activate Storm, ask if he has a response, he doesn't, I chain E-Controller to switch one of his tokens to attack mode; he still dosn't have a response. His 2 cards in hand were 2 Dekoichis and I forget what his 2 set M/T's were. I activate Last Will to special summon Lily, then tribute (tributed Des Lacooda) summon for Mobius, switch Pyramid Turtle to attack mode.. I equip Big Bang Shot to Mobius and have it attack a def mode goat for 2800 damage (he was at 6600). Pyramid Turtle attacks Stein for 500 damage and Lily attacks the attack mode goat and I pump her to 3400 for almost exactly game. We both said "Wow, that was a long game 1." We both sidedeck and start game 2 as fast as possible. Time is called on my first turn. However, on his 2nd turn he Steins me for game. That was fast. Game 3 we do the End of Match Procedure again; neither of us can side deck now though. I try to Ceasefire for game on his end phase of his 2nd turn; but he had Decree set from his 1st turn. I wonder If I should've activated it on his end phase of his 1st turn. Anyway, a few turns later he attacks my f/d and my Pyramid Turtle with his Breaker with a counter and Jinzo. With Pyramid Turtle I summon Patrician. My turn I MST his set M/T and attack his Breaker with Patrician for the sudden death win. Lee is a good player who seemed to get flustered when the nerves got to him. Nice try Lee. Only the second match all day that went to time for me; I think (maybe the first).
Results: 3-3 (7-8)
Round 7: Me vs. Timothy Raridon Table 61
All I saw of Timothy's deck was Monarch and Frogger. He owned my huge deck 2-0 and there was nothing I could do about it. I just hope I can win round 8 to go 4-4 with a 65 card deck.
Results: 3-4 (7-10)
Round 8: Me vs. Haven Granberg Table 63
Haven was a nice little kid, probably around the age of 10 or 11; I never did ask him. He was running an Insect deck and I knew I was in trouble. I ran Insects before SOI was released and top 8'd a Regional in '05 as well as an Insect deck got me my invite for '05 Nats by not losing in the 3rd LCQ of that day. That's when I passed my Lv. 2 test the next day after dropping with the Insect deck after going 3-5 at the Nats that Max Suffridge won. Anyway, Haven wins Game 1 due to the fact that he gets 3 Doom Dozers out during the whole game and I can only kill 2 of them. Game 2 I get my beatdown monsters and just crush his low attack insects. I don't think he got a Doom Dozer that game. Game 3 was almost the same as Game 1. He just drew more monsters than I did and finally won with a well played Doom Dozer. I had that feeling that as soon as I saw his Insects that I was going to lose no matter how well I played against him. However, I think his deck needed a little bit of work; but he played it very well. Good job Haven.
Results: 3-5 (8-12)
So I finish at 137th place going 3-5 with a 65 card deck. I think I got what I wanted out of that placing. My experiment failed horribly. I still had fun and loved the fact that I lost to an Insect deck. I only ended up making one mistake (round 3 vs. burn guy). I go and talk to ETurks to ask him how he did; he says he didn't do much better than me and went 4-4 and finished 94th. So for some reason we are both hella tired and basically want to leave after we find out who top 8'd and who all gets prizes. I think we both had a bad case of jet lag; which might have cost us a few game wins if we weren't thinking clearly. However, I don't like to use excuses; I lost because I was an idiot and ran a 65 card deck. Next Shonen I play in, I'll run a 40-42 card deck.
I find out that Landon Hall (the guy in the wheelchair) ends up going 5-3 and gets 60th place. I'm so excited for him. He did very well and I think it might've been his first Shonen. I wish I would've stayed longer to talk to him about his deck and how well he did. I wish I would've talked to him mom too; I believe she was there and I think she appreciated what I asked the judges to do for him (if she knew I did it). I'm so happy for him, even though he didn't top 8; I bet he fealt very happy about winning some prizes too. Good job Landon, hope to see you again sometime. Good luck in the future.
Props:
-Everyone I met was nice and courteous (except maybe Emon, lol).
-For there being a Subway in the Seattle Center food court area.
-Wendy's and McDonald's being so close to our hotel.
-The shuttle bus driver.
-Landon Hall, Emon, Jake McNeely, Shuffle & Cut Team, Fili Luna, Austin Kulman, and anyone else who I talked a lot with during Saturday. Everyone one of you were cool and interested in what I had to say (except Emon sometimes, lol). Emon cracks me up and I don't know why.
-Seeing the Space Needle, Safeco Field, and the football stadium in person.
-The early morning beauty of the Rocky Mountains and clouds on the flight home. I'm glad I got to see a lot of it.
-The Cardinals winnin the WS for the fist time since I've been alive and for ETurks and me hitting up a Sports Bar in the STL on the way home. It was hilarious how everyone burned everyone abuot their football teams.
-The Seahawks losing to the Chiefs. The Rams are still tied for first in their division!
-Losing my bet with Ameen Bahar. It taught me a lesson. If you're going to bet a deck; play your best deck.
Slops:
-Having to leave early Sunday morning, especially since ETurks didn't feel like staying on Sunday anyway for the Regional or other things.
-Not trading that much and not being able to sell any cards outside of the tourney. Are Seattle players broke? Just kidding.
-Not going inside the Space Needle or being able to see inside either of the stadiums.
-Having to sit by the wing of the plane on both the flight there and back. The wing blocked a lot of our view.
-Rams losing badly to the Chargers because their defense played poorly in the second half.
-Not maindecking any Cyber Dragons, all 3 were in the side deck.
Comments and questions; just let me know. If you want to flame me, fine; but don't be too harsh about it. I like sarcastic and critical flames; not mean flames. Let's be civil in my post, I don't want it to get shut down, lol. Thanks for reading and I hope you have a great day.
EDIT: All of that was copied from my Pojo post. I just wanted to let you all know why I didn't post my any religious statements on the Pojo post.
A) The immaturity level on Pojo is way up compared to here.
B) I had a few people complain vehemently about me posting my religious views on a gaming forum; even ones outside of Pojo
C) I'd rather post my religious views on my Blogs on myspace, my team's forums, or on a forum like this one that is very mature.
Thanks guys and gal(s).
