Secret Rares?

So many secret rares in one set? Is this a good idea? Nine of them in ONE set? I don't know about you but I've opened 5 1/2 boxes of the most recent set and haven't pulled even ONE of those secret rares....now, I'm a collector beside being a player but I don't think I have deep enough pockets even being paid quite resonably to be able to keep up with THAT kind of pace and rarity!....What's your opinion? Is this too much too fast?

I gave up a long time ago trying to keep up collecting all the promos, tournament packs, tin feature cards, duelist pack cards, Shonen Jump promos, etc.....I was just hoping to be able to assemble a complete 1st Ed. set of every major release.....looks like that's going to fall by the wayside as well <sigh>

Some of those secret rares are mighty fine and powerful cards. It didn't please me to see the St. Louis SJC dominated by decks that had to fork over some pretty impressive sums of money in order to assemble a deck that featured 3 copies of cards not even released to the general public yet....now we're going to deal with this? It seems to me that good cards are becoming far too expensive again, I thought we'd made progress toward making fine decks affordable with the release of structure decks....this seems a step backward to me.

Voice your opinion here...am I off base?

You're on the right base, John. I agree that the cost for these Secret Rares is out of hand. I hope the rumors are false that because we have these Secret Rares we won't receive the LIGHT Structure Deck. It doesn't seem fair to the everyday player that these cards are so hard to obtain. I haven't seen any of them either, and I've opened quite a few packs of STON as well (though nowhere near 5 1/2 boxes).

As far as good cards becoming too expensive, I agree with that as well. If a player wants to build a Diamond Dude Turbo deck, he's going to have to fork over a few hundred dollars. Malicious goes for around $30; Destiny Draw for $20-25; Magical Stone Excavation approaches $50; and if they want to add in a Card Trooper, there's another $50+.

It's really a shame considering by year's end or early next year, we'll likely have a good portion of these cards as reprints in some form or another, but if a player wants to play it now, they have to break the bank to do it.

:edit: Personally, I want a playset of Meltiel, Sage of the Sky for a counter-Fairy Deck, but there's no way I'm willing to part with that kind of cash, or even that much trade bait to get them.

Okay, I managed to get my first 2 Destiny Hero - Malicious the old fashioned way, luck. I got the first one by buying about 5 each of the Jaden/Aster Double Blister, which of course was under $25.

The next one I purposely went fishing for, and bought about 10 each, and that hit me for around $45-50, and I also got a Destiny Draw out of the deal as well.

The Third, I broke down and bought 2 boxes on ebay for about $88 incl Shipping, and out of the 2 boxes, I got

1 ea Destiny Hero - Malicious
2 ea Destiny Draw
2 ea Eternal Dread
2 ea Elemental Hero Shining Phoenix Enforcer
3 ea Over Destiny
4 ea D - Counter

So, your chances of getting what you want from a box, instead of paying for the pricey singles themselves, get just a little bit better. I was just trying to get at least one Malicious and a Destiny Draw, and managed to get a pretty good pull overall.

My shop had about 4 secret rares out of all the boxes. He sold out, but even the individual raresa are too expensive from my taste

the rares from ston are hard to get i managed to get one.

but prices of single cards depends on where you shop.

i want sattelitte cannon wich can go for near on £150.00
in some on line stores but i could have bought 3 for £90.00
on ebay.
at the last oturnament i went to people were selling them for
25-30 quid a peice.
at the same tournament i managed to get two ingection fairy lilys secret rare 1st adition lod for £24.00.
now i plan to buy 3 shrinks and the alternate art cyber end dragon for 5.00 a piece.

I'm in a mixed boat on this one.

I remember back when Jinzo was teh secret rare. It was (and is) a massively poweful card that only certain folks were "Destined" to gete. My brother in law was of these lucky ones. We putlled a lot of tactics to pull the machine down.

And in a sense it was a good thing. If you can leverage that secret powerful card to your advantage, then good for you, it makes Blue Eyes as fearful as it was in the TV show because of its power and rarity.

Then "Tinzo" came out. My wife bought one, unbeknownst to her brother, ,and his jaw dropped when he got schooled by one. Then the duels got more intense since we had equal power, adn that was a good thing.

So I'm not sure where things stand on my thoguhts about the secret rares. I guess a timed re-release of them can give you the best of both worlds. Don't get me wrong, i'm SUPER JAZZED that I now own 4 Shrink cards not even a year after they were only SJC prizes, butI think some SJC winners who want to capitalize on these prize cards aren't. 8^D

I got one in my first Box I bought (lucky I guess)--it was the Gellenduo. But, correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't the Secret Rares running at about 1:24+, or something like that? Even if it is that prominant, think about this...Back when there were only 1-2 Secret Rares at that rarety, you could buy about 5 boxes and have them all. Now you buy 5 boxes and even if you get one in every box, you've just scratched the surface.

I say, sure...go ahead and put in 9 Secret Rares, but you sure as well better make them 9 x easier to pull out of a box!! I'm really miffed that they took away our Structure Deck!! I have been looking to get the ultimate "Angel" deck since I started, and they finally came out with the perfect cards for my build and they put them out of reach!! We've got Fiends out the wazzoo, but they take away the few "Angels" we get? Bummer!!

Grumble, grumble, grumble....

I bought 2 STON Boxes, and only got one Secret Rare, so it's not 1:24.

It's somewhere between 1:36 and 1:48. Closer to 1:36, so that's probably the 'real' ratio. Just like the old SCRs.

Since I'm posting ....

Collector: I *hate* having 9 Secret Rares in a 60 card set like this. WASTE WASTE WASTE WASTE. The Ultra Rares and their true ratio of 1:30+/- is bad enough, and there are only 4 of them. I'm a complete and total hater of the 60 card set to begin with, this just burns my biscuit even moreso. If you try and collect the whole thing the 'old fashioned way' ($$$), you end up with an even larger box of commons than before. And believe me, it's a BIG box already.

Player: I *hate* having 9 Secret Rares in a 60 card set like this. It's bad enough I'm innundated with Destiny Elemental Neospacians Samurais every time I open a pack, but with the rumor mill at full force for us not getting SD11, the aftermarket prices are outrageous, which potentially limits me from making the deck(s) I want to make.

No matter my perspective (and I could rant about this for HOURS), I hate it. Hands down. No wiggle room.

Get rid of the Ultimates and give me 2 Secrets per box. Or just have 1 Secret Rare for the 60 card sets. And for goodness sakes make it worth my while. STON is the best set in a long time, and I've bought the least of it retail since SOD, which means less $$ in Konami/UDEs pocket. I don't think I'm alone in that, the vendor I deal with claims they can't move STON at all now, and have dropped the box price by almost $10 already.

Eeven if they went with the Tripple Pack + Secret Rare boxes, like for IOC, FET and RDS, it would be better than what they did to us here!!

1:36, let's see...if I want (specifically) the Neo-Parshath, that would be......[carry the 5...] 1:324* (ish)

* Standard Disclaimer: This number is not to be used as actual statistic. Actual statistic may vary in your area due to altitude and climate changes. No booster packs were harmed in the making of this post.

Unfortunately, my first STON pack that could have had a secret, had it, "Harvest, Angel of Wisdom", so I'd defiantly be a bad example in representing the pull rate.

Anyway, my opinion is to have cards actually worth what they do, and their affect on the game. Make simple, broken cards out of reach by making them secrets or whatever so they're not pulled so often. I think whoever's deciding the rariety of these cards should take into consideration how popular they might become. The light structures are by far not worth being secrets, most are supportive of a fairy build, which doesn't have a hold on the metagame.

My point is to equalize different deck types. Make the card that makes a deck hard to get, and there won't be many of that deck type. Make the E-Hero fusions rares or even commons, because they don't get that much attention. My goal would be to craft a world in yugioh where many decktypes are not only possible to build, but also equally playable against what the other duelists can actually get their hands on. Most likely, that wouldn't be gadgets or monarchs in my world.

In the end, someone from Konami or UDE are actually making certain decks popular, because they decide how available a certain card, or cards are.

I hate to be so negative twice in a row, but I don't believe they think about anything so complex as the current metagame when making these decisions. Besides, they probably thought of all this a year (or longer) ago.

<speculation>

I believe that Konami, under pressure from UDE, under pressure from us, agreed to allow them to pre-release the new SD11 cards, but only as secrets. Konami figured it would sell more cards. UDE figured it would please the masses. And from what I've seen in general, that appears to pretty much be the case. I think overall STON has sold very very well compared with more recent sets. I think overall people are happy they have 70 new cards (60 base + Grandmaster + 8 more secrets + Shrink) in the card pool that weren't there before the STON preview.

</speculation>

I despise how we're being innundated by cards from every direction now, and the waste factor continues to increase. As a collector, it's almost impossible and extremely expensive to keep up with it. As a player, it's almost impossible and extremely expensive to keep up with it. [I see this activity as burning out the market prematurely.] When it's all said and done, SD11 will eventually come out and they'll all be in one box for $9.99, thus irritating everyone that wanted to keep up in the first place.

But I will say this: I'd rather have a boatload of new Secret Rare cards every set to deal with than another set like DR3 :D I just won't collect them anymore. Simple as that. No way on this Earth (or any other for you multi-dimensional types) am I going for 3x everything anymore, STON put the nail in that coffin for good.

Bitter? Yep. Shouldn't have posted in this thread at all, and now I've done it twice.

This is fine for the 'average player'. However, and it is a big however, when one gets to people who are willing to pay to fly all over the continent to play a card game, those people will pay what they have to in order to get the cards they need to win. Remember chaos emperor dragon and yata garasu? Both secret rares, both insanely powerful, both were going for $30-50 each back in the day. Now, if one could play those cards in threes, people would have done so, and they would have paid to do so. And they would have probably have done extremely well tourney-wise. In the meantime, the average player who can't or won't afford those power cards gets trounced most of the time against those who will. Is this fun? I think not.

I do think that having that this many secret rares is silly, especially if they will be unrealeased for some time in the future. Perhaps it would be better to have alternate art cards for secret rares- something for the collectors whilst everyone can have a good chance to aquire the 'useful' cards at a standard rate.

Out of sheer curiosity, after reading all the comments here, I decided to check toywiz and see if they still have the Light Structure deck listed. Turns out they do, with a release date in july.

I know it's not the most credible source of news, but why would they push the release date back just to dissapoint us?

I've said it before. This is one of those things that I would rather be wrong about and would love it if I were. That said, I have no regret that I have a number of the Secret Rares from that set already because a) everyone knows how I am with shinies in the first place and the term I use to describe myself and b) I can run with them now and doubly moreso after Force of the Breaker comes out since Light Fairies help feed the Chaos. Ph34r the Gellenduo!
