If your Silent Swordsman LV5 attacks your opponent directly and they activate waboku, does the attack still go through as a direct attack allowing LV5 to level up or does he not gain his effect?

By definition, it has not been a successful attack. A successful attack has to inflict damage. So Silent Swordsman doesn't get his effect.

But Swordsman's effect doesn't say it has to inflict damage, it just says it has to attack directly; technically he still attacked directly he just inflicted no damage thats why i was wondering.

I've asked a similar question about "Spirit Reaper", which also doesn't discard when no damage is inflicted.

i understand that an effect that activates by dealing damage such as spirit reaper will not be activated if he inflicts zero damage, but the text on LVL5 does not say a successful attack or that it has to deal damage, just that it has to attack directly. thats whats got me confused. is there a difference between attacking directly and successfully attacking directly?

I thought you'd say that. However, upon reading "Spririt Reaper", the truth is all it says is it has to make a direct attack for its effect to trigger.

thx all for input....i have just found a misprint of my LE version of the card, meant to be printed as "successfully attacks your opponent directly". This clears everything up as the card was re-printed to include this text.

Plz look for others of my post including topics on shien's spy and cyber blader and post what you think

And as a general rule, when a card effect triggers off of a direct attack, it's going to have to be successful to do so, even if the text doesn't explicitly say it has to inflict damage.
