also since i didn't get to go to this event i wanted to know if anybody from cog went to the sjc and what did u run if u were playing in it also how well u did?

I was unable to attend, but the Gearfried deck fascinated me. Big props to him for having the guts to run it, and big big props for top 8.

Hydros are not new to SJC Top 8. The Gearfried player made a HUGE misplay by ditching Mirror Force in his Top 8 feature match via Graceful. And Skey23 should be logging in to post some comments as he was at the event.

I have met Matt Stille (Gearfried guy)- he judges in the regional/prereleases in the St Louis area. Nice guy!

We ended up talking between rounds at the last regional here, whilst I was playing my inaba/spatial deck. He didn't seem to be the sort of person who would play CC at all. I'm really happy that he did so well :D

I played an Ojama Trio lock deck (with Spatial Collapse and Kaiser Colosseum) that I took to a 4-1 record, then lost a really close (but really good) Round 6 match. After that, my brain was just about fried. My deck takes a lot of thinking to play, plus I hadn't had much sleep and we missed breakfast to get there on time. I lost two more straight, and then dropped so we could go get dinner. Sitll, I think I can tweak it a little more and make it work, I just don't know where I'll play it next...there aren't a lot of regionals or SJC's in the area coming up. It was fun playing something so different though, and Julia and Jason from Metagame got a kick out of hearing about it.

Matt was a very nice guy! I had the pleasure of dueling against him with my Demise Deck. It was very fun. I absolutely LOVED his Gearfried Deck. It was a very nice change from the standard Stein/Soul Control you see in every Top 8 these days. Overall, it was a very good event! I'll probably post more later.

Matt is a good personal friend of mine, as we both live right outside of St. Louis (he is good friends with YGO DOC too, we all judge together). I am very proud of him for how he did.

Then they got a flat and didn't make it back to IL until about midnight Monday. Bad end to a wonderful weekend. But in the car they had a new deck idea.......

And that opportunist player I've ranted on a few times cause he pisses me off? He was there too. 7-2 in the Scrub Brush challenge. I had to ask him how many of those games he cheated in.......but I was partially joking.

That reminds me........did anyone get DQ in or around round 4 of the shonen? Kevin (who I was talking about) says the only reason he didn't make top 8 is because his opponent in round 2 blatently cheated...but didn't get caught till round 4, and then got a DQ. When I asked how he cheated, I was told drawing extra cards.....how do you get caught doing that 2 rounds later????? And why didn't he call a judge over? I think he just lied. Anyways, can you confirm/deny any DQ during the shonen, Skey? I ask you because you judged at it.

I was the Head Judge of the Austin SJC. Only 2 people got DQd at this event, and neither was for Drawing Extra cards or for Cheating.

Whoever said they got DQd for Cheating was mistaken.

Hello everyone, I just registered and this will be my first post. Thanks to CPMillerWV for referring me to these forums. I had so much fun at SJC Austin. My deck was owning people left and right. I'm going to run it with new techs in it at SJC Seattle if I can make it. I swear, this deck owns the format right now. I don't see me losing again unless I make mistakes. I lost my way out of top 4'ing with Gearfried. I let Gearfried down. Top 8 I made 3 horrible misplays. Game 2 I discard Force but should've discarded Premature. GAme 3 I discarded with Smoke Grenade Mike's Brain Control, but I should've discarded his Storm so that I could set BOTH Ring and Mirror Force. However, even with that misplay; I misplayed a 3rd time. I either a) shouldn't have Rang either of my own monsters or b) should have Rang Lily instead. Then I would've won a couple turns later because of what we both topdecked. I'm killing myself over those misplays, but I still had a great weekend.

I got to sell my Nintendo DS Light for $80 (gave my friend a good deal) and then I got $50 to turtor the kid who I beat in round 4 of the SJC for one half of an hour. I'm so excited and hyped, I need to go to Seattle. Anyone know of a sponsor that can help me get there?

Also, thank you for all the compliments. I played almost flawlessly on Saturday. I made 2 misplays on Saturday in round 2 which cost me round 2. As long as I didn't make mistakes, I won the matches. Also, on Sunday I won like 27 of 30 matches playing anyone who wanted to challenge Gearfried. The deck was just awesome. It is like now 35-13 or so including a few online YVD duels. The deck has only been 2-0'd 2 times. All the rest of the duels have gone to game 3. I wish I could've made top 4; but I guess Seattle is my next chance?

EDIT: Oh yeah, I almost forgot. Thank you Dale Bellido for teaching my team Founder Eddie Turks how to shuffle like a madman. ALL of my decks have been drawing better since I started using Dale's method and that's the method I used all day Saturday and in the top 8 of Sunday. I lost the top 8 match, the deck won the top 8 match.

Welcome Matt! Welcome! I think you'll find this site much more 'grown up' than other sites around. Feel free to introduce yourself in our Intro/Farewell area!

Originality is also prized here more than at some other forums. Very nice and unexpected design. Maybe you should wander over to Digital Jedi's newly forming Cookie Slayer Collective.

Now, which shuffling technique is this? I tend to either use the Vegas-style 'pile' shuffle (which can be hard on the cards) or dealing them into 4 or 5 different piles before recombining them.

The method Dale taught Eddie and Eddie taught me is the 5 pile shuffle, then last pile into 4 piles, then last pile into 3 piles, then combine and shuffle for a while. It works wonders. I'm glad originality is good here.

MATT!!!

Word! You should post in the Intro/Farwell forum......

Anyways, welcome. Glenn is here too, and the guy who played the Inaba White Rabbit deck at the regionals we all judged. You should let me know if you are going to Collector's on Saturday, I might go if you and Eddie are.

I'm going to DK tonight, but not collector on Saturday. I have to work 9-5. I might go to DK Saturday though; hope to play/see you soon.

I'm interested in this. So say you have 40 card deck. You pile shuffle into 5. Meaning I have 8 cards in each pile. And then I pick up the last 8 and pile shuffle into 4 and thus have 2 card each.... then another 3 pile shuffle?

And props to you Gearfried Master. Joey Wheeler would be proud. And I'm scared to go against you and your 3x "free confiscation" deck. :p

Hey Simon. I've got a question for you. Why is it that Kevin "Skillz" Salyer got a lot more points for the Regional on Sunday than he did for the SJC on Saturday? Why is it that my points only went up like 3-8 pts. when I won on Saturday for the Jump? Shouldn't my ranking have gone up a bit more than that because of the ranking of the tourney and your ranking as a judge? Do you have any idea why our points (Kevin's and mine) hardly went up at all for wins in the SJC? Please let me know. Also, was one of the players who got DQ'd the guy who played Kevin in round 2 which made the lunch break get extended?

I honestly don't know why he got more points for Sunday's Regional. You both should have received more points for the SJC on Saturday especially since my being an L3 should have jumped them up a bit. That's weird.

And no, neither of the people that were DQd from the event was the player you are referring to.
