I had a disagreement with someone last night and wanted to know- can you use Smashing Ground on a face down card on your opponent's side of the field if it is the only monster on the field?

nope.....you cant as far as i know since the monster cant be seen to verify the higher defense

Why would you have to see it if there was only one moster? That seems stupid if you ask me. From what I read in the card ruiling, I think you can use it like that.

the way i see is that the Game Mechanic couldnt determine a target if the DEF of the monster isnt able to be confirmed. Without being able to confirm the DEF of the monster Smashing Ground shouldnt work

A face-down card has no stats. No ATK an no DEF. In order for "Smashing Ground" to work you must be able to determine the DEF of the card.

You cannot use "Smashing Ground" or "Fissure" if the only monster(s) your opponent controls is(are) face-down.

Face-down cards are considered to have no Attribute, Type, Sub-Type, and ATK and DEF stats. That's why you can't use Smashing Ground on a face-down.

For Example: Nobleman of Crossout
If u destroy a flip effect monster, regaurdless of whether there are more copies in the either players deck the deck is shuffled

Ok I think I get it. It's like what makes that game work. Like how you have to have a bisycle chain on your bike for it to work, right?

Sort of. With "Nobleman of Crossout", you only search and shuffle the deck if the monster removed had a Flip Effect.

A Game Mechanic may be easier explained by this...

If you equip a face-up monster with an Equip Spell Card and that monster is flipped face-down by an effect. What happens to the Equip Spell Card? It gets destroyed because it cannot be equipped to a face-down card. The Game Mechanic is what says it can't be equipped to a face-down card. So, we say the Equip Spell Card was destroyed by a Game Mechanic and not by an effect.
