SP02-EN005: Grandmaster of the Six Samurai

Wow, this is probably my first time doing a card review of a promo card. And this card, USA is getting it first, not Japan. And for that kind, it's pretty good.

Let's check this promo card and why I'm bothering to preview.

-----------

Grandmaster of the Six Samurai
EARTH/Warrior
Level 5
2100ATK/800DEF

You can only have 1 "Grandmaster of the Six Samurai" monster on your side of the field. While you control a face-up "Six Samurai" monster, you can Special Summon this card from your hand. When this card is destroyed by your opponent's card effect, add 1 "Six Samurai" monster from your Graveyard to your hand.

------------------

Okay, let's see it's stats. It's a warrior. But it's a LV5 so ROTA thing doesn't matter. So that's safe. Also it's 2100ATK, so it's not searchable. A 2100ATK 1 tribute monster is usually bad in the current CC cause of Cyber Dragon, but this one isn't too bad, cause of it's effect. So stat wise, nothing too interesting and being a warrrior doesn't matter at all with exception of that you can use Warrior Returning Alive on this card... but that card isn't too good anyway. (Unless it's 100% warrior deck) Not to mention, with this card effect, you WON'T be running Warrior Returning Alive when you play this card in the deck.

First effect. If there's a Six Samurai monster on the field, then you can special summon it from hand. Now, ANY card that can special summon itself from hand is a GOOD CARD. (e.g. Cyber Dragon, Chaos Sorcerer, etc.) In fact, it's pretty much a Six Samurai version OF a Cyber Dragon. Thank GOD that it only selects Six Samurai monster. If it said something like, "When there's a warrior-type" instead, (i.e. ANY Warrior) for a special summon.... this card would be BROKE! Not to mention EVERYBODY will run a Warrior Toolbox with 3x of this thing. But thank god it's not. So this effect by itself makes it only playable in a Six Samurai. Also, they thought this card through, that you can't have multiple Grandmasters on your field at the same time. Cause if that's allowed, then you would summon all 3x Grandmaster at once after summoning one Six Samurai... 3x2100ATK beatstick in one turn... no, that's broken.

But that's not just it. This effect by itself covers up the biggest weakness of the whole Six Samurai deck theme. Six Samurai monsters, in order to have any effect, must have 2x Six Samurai on the field, or they are effectless normal monsters. This card solely covers that prob. Just search a Six Samurai with ROTA, then normal summon Six Samurai, then special summon Grandmaster. There, you just already covered up the requirement for your deck to start off. This effect itself demands that you run 3x of these guys in ANY Six Samurai deck. (especially since it's not searchable) Also, this card effect also helps out Great Shogun Shien as well. Great Shogun, needs 2x Six Samurai to special summon itself from hand. (Or else is a LV7 2 tribute monster... bad) But with Grandmaster, you already got 2x Six Samurai swarm, so it's a cinch. Combo Cyber Dragon and even Marauding Captain and you can swarm 5x monsters all in one shot all from your hand with Cyber Dragon > Marauding Captain > Six Samurai > Grandmaster > Shien. (Unless your foe got Torrential Tribute ready) Anyway, this effect by itself already makes this card kickass. I mean, it's a 2100ATK special summon beatstick. We all love Cyber Dragon, so what's the prob?

But that's not all. This card have ANOTHER effect. If this card is destroyed by your foe's card effect, you can select 1 Six Samurai in the graveyard, and add it to your hand. Yep, it's a Warrior Returning Alive in a monster form. So this card is a potential FLOATER to boot, if it's destroyed by your foe's card effect. But people, how many times you see Cyber Dragon being destroyed by a card effect... yep, ALOT. And so will this card. And it doesn't have to hit the graveyard to activate this effect and thus BTH doesn't matter, as long as you got a Six Samurai in the graveyard.

(FUN NOTE:
Now, if this card said just "destroyed by a card effect", then this thing would be the most broken promo card ever. (Well, minus Exchange of the Spirits I guess) Why, cause all of Six Samurai, With exception of Grandmaster, have an effect of, "If this card would be destroyed, you can destroy another Six Samurai on your field instead". So Six Samurai have an effect of letting other Six Samurai take the blow for you. Now IF you combine that with a "Any card effect destruction" of Grandmaster, all six samurai will bust that card always to get a Six Samurai from their graveyard.... Another words, a lock that's impossible to break with exception of Mirror Force/Torrential/Lightning Vortex/etc. But thank god they though things through and didn't put it that way.)

Lastly, from what I'm getting, this card can select ITSELF, if it hits the graveyard. So say Grandmaster gets destroyed by your foe's card effect, and you don't have any Six Samurai in your graveyard. But once this card hits the graveyard, it activates and it can select itself and you can add it to your hand... yep, if that doesn't sound like a floater to me, I don't know what is. Yes BTH can stop that, but if you have another Six Samurai in the grave already, then even BTH doesn't matter. Well, yeah, you CAN destroy it as a result of battle... but that means you'll have to suicide a Cyber Dragon, or run it over with a Monarch/Jinzo. (And no Zaborg power) You can use an Enemy Controller, but that's a -1 in card advantage. I think the only deck type that'll have somewhat of a breeze of beating this card as a result of battle are Skill Drain decks with Goblins/Chainsaw/Ohka/etc.

So this monster is a Cyber Dragon + Warrior Returning Alive + Floater in a Six Samurai deck with 2100ATK beatstick to boot... that's freaking scary. Of course, you don't always have to get itself. If you have another Grandmaster in your hand, you can select another Six Samurai, and start your combo there. And thus, the combos gets crazy with this card in a Six Samurai. I mean, I don't think a Six Samurai deck can run a Pot of Avarice with this much graveyard reuse power. (I'll try to have at least 1x Six Samurai in my graveyard always with this deck type)

I see so much potential in this 1 card it's not even funny. The only limitation is that it can only fit in a Six Samurai deck.

Overall, I give this card a

9 out of 10

For a support card of a deck theme, this one like beats the cake. I never heard of a one single card of support theme that can be this powerful. (I'll have to say it even beat stuff like Destiny Draw and such) Now, if this card had no restrictions and can select any Warrior from grave when destroyed by your foe's card effect, along with special summon itself from hand if you have a face-up Warrior on your field... yeah... I would have given this card a 11/10 and scream restriction/banning. (If that was the case, it'll be in the broken power level of E-Hero Airman. :p) But thank god it's not.

u miss this part of the effect.-

"You can only have 1 "Grandmaster of the Six Samurai" monster on your side of the field."
