TAEV sneak experiences

Perhaps I should explain about the deck sheets. It's not something we do often, once, maybe twice a year (and not on every flight at that) The idea is that if players have played in a previous flight or casual play, they have other cards from the set at their disposal. There are two columns on the deck sheet, one for what you recieved and one for what is in your deck. We ask them to fill out the recieved portion of their deck sheet and wait for further instructions. At this point the cards aren't theirs yet, we might ask them to pass the deck sheet and cards to the person across from them, to the right of them, etc.....or we may tell them to now make their deck. This keeps people honest.

Well was she leaving the event? I mean she could simply say "Scoop, Drop". Granted, not really fair to the guys getting byes after that but at the same time, hard to penalize someone for doing something that the rules explicitly allow.

It's not quite that simple. As I said, the instructions when the cards were passed out were that the packs you recieved are not yours at this time. So, if the player leaves after they've taken inventory but the cards are not yet theirs then they've done a number of unfavorable things. First and foremost, they're guilty of theft. Secondly, they've disrupted the tournament, and third, they've failed to followed the instructions of a tournament official. This isn't a simple matter of "Scoop, Drop"

As for how "serious" we are about Sneak Previews, we're just like everyone else, we keep it loose and as light hearted as possible. Even at that though as a judge my job is to prevent cheating and keep play as fair as possible. I don't feel that using the deck sheets once or twice a year for a flight to keep people honest is out of bounds.

I just kept the players at the table with nothing but their cards on the table, let no one else near and kept the flight going. But, then again, we keep ours to a nice 8 man flight.

We had a lot of people pulling the Ghosts. We also had quite a few people really upset about the change in rarities, including some of their most desired cards changed into Secret Rares. I know some guys who had already built decks around certain cards that now they can't get, except by buying boxes when they come out. A lot of disappointment there (as much, or more than when we didn't get our Light/Drak structure decks). I fear that UDE is shooting itself in the foot with some of these changes. I haven't done the tally to see if overall we are getting a better deal by the new Rarity structure, but this round left a bitter taste for quite a few people.

You can add me to the tally of those people. I still don't have any Raizas but the one Ultimate one I got at the last sneak preview, and that's after buying two full boxes. Have at least 9 Radiant Mirror Forces, though. I've just about given up hope of playing the actual physical card game anymore, from how expensive it's getting to be, and the difficulty of getting "Secret Rares" especially, and the lack of the last two Structure Decks. My brother and friend have almost given up playing completely, and since gas prices are so high, the only playing aside from the very occasional regional we have to travel over 2 hours to get to, is what I do online. The closest "local" weekly tournament scene is over an hour away in the state capital only, and I live in the third largest city in the state. The DS games are about the only hang-on I have left, and then they won't even be that great, anymore, with the amount of new cards we're getting over Japan.

Yeesh, my little comment turned into a mini-rant. Sorry about that.

CraniumX, I too live in the third largest, or even smaller of a city. The people here took initiative, though. We organized a league of our own at the library, and put out a message in the paper. The resulting league fetches us at least five other people besides me and a good friend, and now we have all become the best of friends. At most we've seen a packed amount of twenty, and everything still ran smoothly. There's not hatred, no thieving, no rants, no heretics, no serious competitions, no money. Just us, our cards, and each others' company. Greatest time.

We've actually tried that at various times, here. At one point, a day-care center here was running Yu-Gi-Oh stuff, which was mostly just a bunch of young kids trading, we all went to it a couple of times, but it just didn't feel right. The kids liked seeing some of the cool cards, but most all were too young to actually even grasp the real rules, even when trying to teach them a little, but then that even stopped. With my brother being in high school now, as well, for this past year, everyone who used to play lost interest, thinking it was too much of a kid's game, or the usual nonsense like that.

I'd love to even just see half of the hobby league stuff, but I don't even think the Toys 'R' Us around here holds anything Yu-Gi-Oh related anymore, event wise, and even when they did, the promo cards were restricted to those under 18, so I just took my brother to see what they were like, anyway. I'm just glad the game can even thrive elsewhere, as it's a completely dead thing around here apparently. If I had the capital, I'd try to run a game shop of sorts, but it would probably go out of business like all the others have that have been around here. There's barely only one comic book shop staying alive around here, and it's had to move three times in the last 5 years, I think.
