Thread of edited cards...

A few of these cards look like Konami had some extra art work lying around or just changed them for the sake of doing something different rather then being actual edits.

That said, what a colossal waste of time on Konami's part. Horns I just barely understand. (Nah! Not really.) But halos? So angels are okay as long as they don't have halos? That's like saying Ice Cream is okay, but ice cream cones are baaaaad.

They also went waaaaay overboard with the cleavage thing. Even going so far as to remove The Unhappy Girl's breasts altogether. I know some Americans can be pretty Victorian in there ideals. But I'm pretty sure we've all come to the consensus that females have breasts and that sometimes - they bulge. This is not a new concept. This is physics. Now the exposed cleavage I guess could be deemed offensive. But targeted for kids or not, have they seen some of kids comic book characters in the US? Pretty bulgy.

I also don't get the inconsistency. Sure, maybe they just overlooked petite angel's halo. But why put shorts on Gagagigo on Stumbling and nowhere else? And if nudity is bad even when the character is genderless then why completely redraw Final Flame with a naked genderless guy. Why is the naked genderless guy okay in some pics and not okay in others? Who's there sensor over in Japan and does he drink heavily?

Parasite Paracide is about the only one I understand. That was nasty.

However, I don't get why green blood is okay for Staunch Defender, blue blood is okay for Stamping Destruction, but the blue blood already in Share the Pain is not okay and gets removed entirely?

Otohime completely eludes me. Nice gams though.

I get the pentagrams.

I get the removal of religious symbols.

What I don't get is why only the Christian religious symbols were considered offensive. "Remove crosses (or anything resembling a lower case T, see South Park), remove nuns, remove halos, but wait....the non-Christian/pagan religious symbols are okay. The Americans will never notice. <_< >_> Wait... Is that an Ankh?"

And apparently, skulls aren't bad all of the time, just some of the time.

Why did Homunculus the Alchemic Being need a suntan?

But probably the single most confounding edit out of all of those in this Game we call Yu-Gi-Oh! is the replacement of certain gear we all no and duck with a thing we like to call:

A Cosmogun (!?!?!)

In most cases, Id say the cosmogun was an improvement. Except for Barrel Dragon. He was fricken' cool with that .38 for a head. Or was it a .357? Whatever, it was kool!

And lastly I have a complaint for the guy who made this website. Obviously a lot of work went into this. Would it have killed him to put the individual sets on separate pages. I don't know about you high speed modems but that page took forever to load. And I had to right click and "Show Picture" more than 90% of the images on the page (300 pics mind you). That was tedious. He seems to think it will just take a long time to load. But actually, all it does is stop loading after so many pictures. He needs to separate each set on its own page with links to each set on every page. If not, a lot of people will just bypass his site because its unloadable.

Now, here's a question to ask:

If you had never seen the "originals" -- say the ones that were released in the US were the originals -- would you be complaining about any of those pictures?

Would you be complaining that Soitsu didn't have a butt crack? Or Dark Ruler didn't have horns? Or maybe you'd be more understanding as to why The Unhappy Girl was unhappy :D

Point being, the edits didn't change the game for me. I don't spend my time drooling over the pictures. Maybe that's part of the game though. Maybe the idea is you play DMG so that your opponent is distracted and you come away with an easy win :D I remember my dad commenting about a magic act by a scantily clad female magician. He said "with that kind of outfit, she could palm a chrysler and I wouldn't notice."

I complain about the edits because it's wrong. I don't agree with them whatsoever, because that's the way they were created, so I don't think that they should be changed because of the Angry Soccer Moms.

You have to admit, some of the edits make no sense.

And you have to agree with DJ, even if you don't have dial up - scrolling down for that long is annoying.

Also- Check out "I edited it myself because you half-assed it" on the near top of that page. It's interesting too.

Well speaking as moderator for te Artist and Writing forumsI haveto say alot of us see more then just the card effects when we look at CCGs. The art has a great deal to do with our desire to play it. It may not make sence to some. But many of us view everything through that creative eye.

I thought Marvel Knights was the ugliest set to come out of VS to date. The only well drawn images were the scantily clad Underworld charaters (figures they get them right ;)) and maybe one or two Plot Twists. Sad to say that turned me off to the whole set.

Green Lantern was a lot better and had me at hello. Avenengers had me at "what set?"

I side with you in full, DJ. The art of anything makes a world of difference to me. Whether it be game graphics, manga, cards, whatever, the art is imperitive. And when it's buthchered by editors, it makes me mad. As you said, eventually, we will know that women have boobs and *gasp* legs *gasp*.

And religious symbols I don't get either... I don't see how it could offend anyone. I mean, most of Japan is Buddhist, so the Cross isn't a Christian symbol to them necessarily, but my point is that they're Buddhist yet they use the Bible and Nuns and stuff on a lot of the cards. What's wrong with it, I say? And hey, I'm not even Christian. I just like the way it looks.

I'm sort of on the fence about the edits. I can understand not wanting to offend people and all, but what about those of us not easily offended?

The religious images I definitely understand as that is often a sensitive subject to most. But the blood and cleavage and gun edits? Come on. You can't keep your kids in a bubble forever.

The images I believe aren't meant to offend; I believe they are meant to inform. People fear what they don't understand. If you shelter people from certain things, they will never learn to accept them. By exposing them to things at an early age, they will learn acceptance and understanding.

I'm not sure either. Our freedom of religion here in the US has its benefits. But at the same time, so many people find representation of one religion offensive but not the representation of another. I don't get it myself. I think if one religous symbol is inAppropriate, then they should all be inAppropriate. Or, they should all be acceptable. Blood oaths and things of that nature I understand. While they sometimes may be religuous blood usually has a way of offensing American parents.

But the inconsistancy of how blood is portrayed boggles me a little bit. First it's colored, then it's removed, then its colored again. Overall, if they are going to have any kind of editing process there should be some consistancy to it. But then why should I expect consitant editing when it took them this long to come up with some consistant rulings?

I suppose blood and gore could scare the younger players, but so could the hex monsters. Well trying to work out what they is scary. Anyway blood guts when you see it once you get used to it. Bt some people don't like it but I do shame some of the ghost type cards don't have severed heads. Well thats my oppinion.

I really do think they changed some stuff just for sake of having a variant. Mystic Tomato/Killer Tomato for example. The Jack O' Lantern tomato wasn't anywhere near as scary as our english version. That just looks like they wanted to make a different card just to have something new.

Fiend Comedian probably was a little scary, but it makes the card seem so much cooler.

Thats true, I do like both tomatos. Shame most of the cards in that change thing no one really uses. I can't remember I deck with goddes of Whim in! Unless it was flip a coin deck, That would be fun.

I've heard that there is a rule that you can use foreign language cards as long as you have a viable translation for them. If that's the case, I'll use all the Japanese versions of cards that I have that are edited out of spite. ^-^

It also makes me wonder --- Are all cards edited this way? Meaning, French, German, Spanish, etc.?

You may not use Japanese card.

Only cards distributed by UDE may be used in UDE events. So you may use French, German, Spanish, etc cards, but not Japanese, or Asian-English cards (like Firewing Pegasus).

Yes, all card released outside of The asian territories are given the edited artwork. (it might even be anywhere outside of Japan)

Um, weren't all the ankhs removed as well?

If you wanted to view the sets separately, you could do that..... the website does say, right at the beginning:

NOTE THAT IF YOU ARE ON DIALUP AND ARE HERE ONLY TO SEE SPECIFIC CARDS, HIT THE STOP BUTTON WHEN YOU CAN READ THIS. SCROLL TO THE CARD THAT YOU WANT TO SEE AND RIGHT-CLICK THE RED "X", THEN SELECT "SHOW IMAGE". THIS WAY YOU DON'T HAVE TO WAIT FOR ALL 300 IMAGES TO LOAD.
