Threatening Roar FET-EN052

  • THREATENING ROAR
    [Trap Card]
Your opponent cannot declare an attack during this turn.
This card is simply amazing. If you have no monsters on the field you can protect your life points for one full turn. Just like waboku or Negate Attack.

If you have a Brain-Jacker face-down on the field you can prevent your opponent from attacking it, and thus will get its effect next turn. Although Waboku would also allow you to get brain-jakers effect your opponent would have the entire main-phase 2 to deal with the monster you took control of. Negate Attack achieves the same effect as Threatening Roar.
Same goes for Cyber Jar, Fiber jar etc. Can protect Tribute Fodder. Your opponent won't be able to suicide a weak monster into Reflect bounder.

Pro: Protection for One whole Turn.
Pro: Protects effects as well (Flip effect or Reflect Bounder)
Pro: It can be chained to any card that would destroy it. Therfore you can activate it jsut like a waboku.

Con: Unlike Negate Attack it can be chained to by spell-speed 2 cards, such as Royal Decree or a Call of the Haunted targetting Jinzo.

However that's not a major problem:
Max: 3x Royal Decree + 1 Jinzo is four chances to stop threatening roar
Whereas your opponent usually Packs at least 5 methods of destroying Spells and Traps, so there's a greater chance of destroying NEgate Attack before it could get its effect.

Con: Sometimes you'll want your opponent to attack and just protect the damage (e.g when you have a wall of Illusion) Waboku will allow that, threatening roar won't. And sometimes you'll want to activate a waboku in your own turn.

Conclusion:
R.I.P Negate Attack

If its difficult to find wabokus in your area, stop trying: Threatening roar will often be better.

One more thing: IT IS A COMMON

Unlike Waboku This will protect you against those DD Monsters that like removing your monsters from play. It's a Chainable version of Thunder of Ruler.

There are cases where being attacked can be beneficial so this doesn't belong in every deck

Also the ruling on this card makes it a little harder at first play than waboku or negate attack and if you respond to an attacking monster with this card you are in for a rude awakening.
You can activate "Threatening Roar" in response to an attack, but the attack has already been declared so it will resolve normally. After that, your opponent cannot attack for the rest of the turn.

That ruling jsut shows you how to use it, knowledge of that ruling will just change when you attempt to activate it.

i. Start Step
Announce that you are going into the Battle Phase. Quick-Play Spell and/or Trap Cards can be activated by either player at this time.
That's when you activate Threatening roar (at the latest)
If your opponnet jumps the gun and declares an attack without announcing phase changes, jsut say: "I activate Threatening Roar as you begin your Battle Phase"

If you suspect your opponent has a Set Trap Jammer, then you might want to activate "Threatening Roar" before your opponent enters Battle Phase.

its a good card, and it could be used over waboku, depending what you want more. if you wanna use waboku more, you most likely want:

- Your monsters to be flipped at times
- "Suicide" monsters but leave yours
- Use during your or your opponent's turn
- Easier protection during battle phase, in case your opponent doesnt do anything you can chain to, besides the declaring battle phase.
- Opponent to declare attacks for cards like gravekeeper's servant

If you want to use this card more, you want:

- Your monsters to stay face down
- Your opponent not to declare any attacks for whatever reason
- Not to use waboku anymore because..... yeah...

so there you have it. waboku, surprisingly enough, is a tad bit harder to find now-a-days for newer duelists since it hasnt been reprinted in anything, and most of the older duelists who have it are either using it or dont want to dig through their commons to find it...

really, there arent too many differences, and they have the same chainability.

artwork- couldnt tell ya- havent seen it yet... :p

The biggest difference I can see where you'd want to use Threatening Roar over Waboku is if you're using a lot of "Flip-Summon" effect creatures like Stealth Bird, Sentry Golem, Swarm of Scarabs/Locusts, etc. With just Waboku, Sasuke Samurai and Mystic Swordsman LV2 still own your creatures, but this can help to stop them cold. I'm sure we'll be seeing LOTS of this card being used, and I would imagine lots of Sentry Golems used with them, especially if people keep trying to play the common "cookie cutter" builds out right now after April 1st. Not too many of the staple monsters in it can outright kill a Sentry Golem anyway, and a little bounce can go a long way. I'm thinking there's another earth monster with an almost identical effect and defense but I can't for the life of me put my finger on the name right now.

"Gravekeeper's Guard" is hane-hane with 1900 defense, but its a dark monster
Aye, that one I know, as I was working on getting a bunch of gravekeepers for a possible deck, I was thinking there was another 1800 defense Earth monster with the "Flip-Summon" bounce effect. I could be mistaken, of course. I'll keep looking, I was thinking I either saw a review of it on Pojo or here in the card review section, but I checked Pojo and nothing looked familiar. I'll check here, and probably just shrug it all off to old age. 26 is over the hill afterall.

You might be talking about Guardian Sphinx. He is Earth and have a bounce effect. But he requires 1 tribute and he is a good 2400 DEF monster.

I found the one I was looking for, finally, not quite the same effect as a flip summon bounce, but it's a great card. They just have to hit it while it's in defense and their creature bounces back to the top of their deck. Can you say, oooops?

I really like to use Thunder of Ruler, but the appearance of THIS card makes me smile. I think it is definitely better than Thunder of Ruler cuz you can wait to see what they are going to do before you Activate it. Hmmm...

Threatning Roar, the better Waboku.

I'll admit it's much much more powerful than Waboku, not being able to "declare" an attack, protecting you from those pesky D. D. Warrior Lady removing your only defense compared to Waboku in effect, but who plays Waboku anymore?

Think about the card control count here.

You activate Threatning Roar, preventing your opponent from declaring any attacks that turn. But it's only for 1 turn, and you lose 1 card in control when your opponent loses none.

Sakurestu Armor is better choice, it's a 1 for 1 deal.

You activate Mirror Force, your opponent loses 3 monster cards when you lose control of 1 card. That's control.

You activate Sakuretsu Armor, destroying 1 monster losing 1 card in control. That's control.

Why not play Tribute to the Doomed anymore? Great effect, it's just that it's 2 for 1. Not control.

Kuriboh to depleat damage to zero from an attack, you lost 1 card in control, your opponent however, didn't lose any. Not contol.

See what I mean?

With Tribute to the Doomed you could use Sinister Serpent or two night assailants so it could end up as a one for one...

That true, but wouldn't you rather use "Tribe Infecting Virus" for mass removal, reuseable effect, and attack posibility? And for face-down monsters, "Nobleman of Crossout" for at least 1-1 deal.

I think the topic has gone off topic. the card we're talking about is used to repond to attacks or prevent them. meaning spell speed 2 cards, tribe, tribute to the doomed all great cards but will not stop the killer they just summoned from handing you your walking papers.

I thought I was the only person who ever used Thunder of Ruler. Being chainable makes this better. I used it mainly for one of my favourite cards Invader of the Throne, the flip effect is a permanent Change of heart but it only works if activated outside of a battle phase. This card is perfect for that because Thunder of Ruler gives away your intention too early. I can also see it being more useful in the new metagame where many experts are predicting Vampire Lord and zombies will dominate. Mirror Force and Sakuretsu will not slow vampire lord down for long but this might allow you the chance to tribute summon next turn and kill Lord in battle.

threatening roar

if you have no monsters on the field, this can be used to protect your lifepoints.

i like this and wabaku.
