Catnipped Kitty
Effect Monster (Beast / EARTH / 2 Stars / ATK 0 / DEF 500)

This card cannot be attacked if there is another Beast-Type monster on your side of the field. Make the DEF of 1 monster on your opponent's side of the field 0 until the End Phase. This effect can only be used once per turn.

Question being, despite being a regular Ignition effect, can its effect can be used during the Damage Step?

Thanks.

Completely relevant. Catnipped Kitty isn't like effects that have improper speed but can activate in the Dmage Step because of proper timing. Its a once per turn deal and doesn't give any indication that it's proper to activate in the Damage Step. Spell Speed has a lot to do with it.

An ignition effect is activated at a specific time--although not limited to the main phase (anymore.)

If it were activated in the damage step it would be activated only in the damage step:

" You cannot target a face-down monster with the effect of "Catnipped Kitty". "

If it were activated in the damage step, the monster involved in damage calculation would be face-up and this wouldn't matter.

But just because an effect can be activated in the damage step doesn't mean it can only be activated then. Take Castle Walls. You can't target a face down monster with that trap card, but you can use it in your Main Phase 1 if you want to. But it can also be used in the damage step. So that's just a statement of what you can target, not when.

Well Spirit Ryu had a specific timing (stated on the card) and um, isn't Swordsman of Landstar a Normal Monster? And Bazoo doesn't seem to quite fit since that effect is to remove the monsters from play which had the added effect of boosting the attack which is different from just outright changing it as a result of activating said effect.

Thanks for the repeat - my question may not have been clear, I was referring to monsters when I asked about ignition effects...

Injection Fairy Lily does her own ATK of course, but not really what I was looking for.

AGreed Bazoo doesn't quite fit - this would be Main Phase 1 anyway wouldn't it rather than the damage step?

I don't think there are any others...

Yeah.. umm The Little Swordsman of Aile is the one with the ignition effect.

Removing monsters from play is a cost.

Chaosrider Gustaph
Gaia Soul
Winged Minion

also have costs,

Ignition effects are always speed one, not that it matters here.

BLS-Envoy actually has two speed 1 effects, one just being an optional trigger.

ALL (Cool people use absolutes. >_>) Ignition effects can only be activated during the Main Phase, except those that SPECIFY. And Kitty does not.

Is that good for you, Legend X? Wow, my Japanese is poor.

Incidentally, and not that it matters much, but "Bazoo the Soul Eater"'s Ignition Effect isn't too much different from "Catnipped Kitty"'s Ignition Effect.

The only thing separating them is that Bazoo's Ignition Effect requires a cost of removing Monster Cards in the Graveyard from play (it's an activation cost, not an effect).

Anyway, the bottom line is that "Catnipped Kitty"'s effect can only be activated during a Main Phase, just like Bazoo and all other Ignition Effects (except when they specifically state otherwise, such as "Spirit Ryu").
