I was looking over the top 16 decklists, and it seems that every person either ran it in thier main deck or in thier side deck. I understand its a great card, but why the massive use? Can someone explain this to me? Do you think this is just a fad, or a permament installment, like sakaretsu?

It started as a stop for Demise. It worked so well, they keep it in. It can stop a lot of combo's requiring a specific monster. Also, you can keep the searchers off to hamper monarchs!

Trap dustshoot has been a big thing in japan for a long time. it can be a real big deal when you do this opening hand and then you know every card your opponent is playing, so you can work around it. it also combos well with any hand disruption or Mind crush to take out multiple pieces... however the current rulings state you only have to flash the magics because you aren't allowed to study the hand.

That's incorrect. A part of Trap Dustshoot's effect is to look at your opponent's hand. There's no mention that you can only examine the monsters in the hand only. If a card mentions you can look at your opponent's hand, you can do so fully until the effect of the card resolves. There's no rule even stating you can quickly reveal the magics and traps and only show the monsters. If that was the case, then in theory, the Trap Dustshoot and Mind Crush combo would never have been effective. The only thing you are not allowed to do, is to take notes of the hand.

Anyways, the main reason Trap Dustshoot would be seeing play I believe anyways, is as a result of the monsters that are currently seeing play. Take Destiny Draw and Destiny Hero - Malicious for example. Returning Malicious to the deck would mean Destiny Draw is potentially a dead card in hand. Card Trooper as well, you would never want to use Sakuretsu Armor on it, so prevent it altogether by returning it to the deck, as well as stopping the dreaded Card Trooper and Machine Duplication move. Monarchs as well, the moment they use Brain Control or Soul Exchange, chain Trap Dustshoot and get rid of their monarch in hand. With all of the draw power in the metagame as well in the form of Cyber Phoenix, Dekoichi, Card Trooper, and Destiny Draw, maintaining a healthy hand size has been easier, meaning the restrictions of Trap Dustshoot have been weakened so to speak.

There is only one ruling under Trap Dustshoot, and it pertains to Exchange. The only mention of the card on the judges list says nothing about "flashing". This isn't proper game procedure for revealing cards when asked to by an effect. You reveal the cards until your opponent is done looking at them (within reason of course). This would also be true for effects like Fake Trap, Mind Crush, The Inexperienced Spy, and search effects like Sangan. That is especially true when your opponent is required to make a selection. He can't do that in a "flash".
