"unaffected by any Spell Cards"

ChaosEmperor12

Emperor of Games
ok this situation came up in a recent duel between myself and a friend... he controlled Horus the Black Flame Dragon LV6 and i ....nothing
i was getting smacked down by horus and was down to 100 lp

i drew for my turn and this is where it got interesting...

i summoned Masked Dragon in attack mode
and played Creature Swap......

am i correct in saying that even though Horus is UNAFFECTED by any spell cards things like Creature Swap still do work....

my Reas.oning behind this is that Creature Swap targets the player.... and does nothing to the creature...

They themselves say they are treated as Epuip Spell Cards
This was "clarified" a few months ago by UDE. We now know there are Equip Spell Cards and Equip Traps. Monsters that become Equips default to Equip Spell. Many rulings were changed by this little piece of information.

Card # LOD-EN088
Card Name Blast with Chain
Card Type Trap
Is Counter No
Is Continuous No

Card Text
After activation, this card is treated as an Equip Card that increases the ATK of the equipped monster by 500 points. Equip a monster on your side of the field with this card. If this card is destroyed by the effect of another card while it is an Equip Card, select 1 card on the field and destroy it.

Rulings

1. [Re: 8-Claws Scorpion] The ATK of "8-Claws Scorpion" becomes 2400 during damage calculation. You cannot chain "Rush Recklessly" or "Blast with Chain" to this effect. If these cards were activated before damage calculation, then the ATK of "8-Claws Scorpion" becomes 2400 during damage calculation so those cards have no effect on its ATK.

2. [Re: Emergency Provisions] If you send "Smoke Grenade of the Thief" or "Blast with Chain" to the Graveyard for the cost of "Emergency Provisions" their effects do not activate, because they were not destroyed.

3. [Re: Gearfried the Swordmaster] The effect of "Gearfried the Swordmaster" will activate even if a Trap Card is equipped to him (such as "Metalmorph" or "Blast with Chain").

4. [Re: Woodland Sprite] An Equip Spell Card sent to the Graveyard by this card's effect is not "destroyed". So the effects of "Butterfly Dagger - Elma", "Axe of Despair", "Malevolent Nuzzler", "Blast with Chain", or "Smoke Grenade of the Thief" cannot or will not be activated.

I see we still have a ruling referring to it as an Equip Spell Card. Nice that they are so thorough and accurate over there. :)

-Edit- Would it have been so hard to remove the word Spell from #4? Again act of congress to get anything changed.

ya, i had a friend of mine come but he wasnt certain so another sub judge came, and i was like i want to appeal and call the head judge but the guy never called him.

my friend was like, "i dont know this card seems to be one of thouse YOU MUST give something in return type cards"

the guys was no, becuase by the time that happens your monster allready left your side.

what bothered me the most is that the opponent insited and that he had checked on the Yugioh-card site. I wasnt just gonna sit there and say, "well the registry at netrep says this, and its a mirror of that so how am i getting different answers." cause we all know how people get when you mention the word netrep.

Over all i was kinda bothered the head judge didnt get called.

i had to keep going because then i got called for stalling.

other than my opponent getting my monsters. the only monster that would have helped me was Cyber Jar, but since the ruling got let stand i lost my jar and then it got saced for a stupid Cybernetic Magician. which then pumped up my other monsters becuase my opponent basically stole them.

So it was your opponent's Horus LV6 and he was using Creature Swap like a permanent Change of Heart and insisting that he wouldn't give up his Horus but you had to turn over your own monster? Wow, the guy should have been drawn and quartered. That takes quite a bit of either treachery or stupidity to think you could have such a broken combo.

yea no kidding.

i kept saying, "dude, i dont think its right. Its like having 2x Change of Heart, plust snatch plus 3x of Brain Control." but he kept insisting in the end, and the judge sided with him. Well i hate the TO because he only gets his homies to judge. You rarely see other peeps and it stinks major.

my friend tried to do his LV 3 Vs test and they wouldnt let him. Talk about haters huh.

Is there a Level 3 judging at your events? How would your friend be prevented from testing? Was it a matter of not meeting criteria? I don't get how he would be prevented if there wasn't a valid (UDE Regulations type) reason. And if you do have a Level 3 judge in attendance and can't appeal a bad ruling that is actually on the "Official Rulings" page I've got to stay out of your area.

This is part of the thing that truley annoys me regarding the rulings revisions a few months ago. I get that they wanted to change the overseas games to match the OCG and have both Equip Spell Cards and Equip Trap Cards. But what's truley frustrating is this incesant use of the word "Equip Card" in various erratas and newer sets. This has truley created more confusion then it has helped stop.

It seems like every few weeks I'm restating and reiterating that there is no such thing as "just an Equip Card" that is neither Spell nor Trap. "Equip Card" is just a label to refer to an Equip in general. Just like a "car" is a way to refer to vehicles in general, but there is no such thing as "just a car" that is neither Ford nor Buick or what-have-you. But these blasted erratas on Dark Necrofear, Thousand-Eyes Restrict, Relinquished, the text on Brain Jacker and some Union Monsters have just muddled everyone's understanding of an Equip Card. Now we have an old ruling still refering to Blast with Chain as an Equip Spell when the revisions made it an Equip Trap.

Thats just ridiculous. A revision to clarify things just made everything worse, like it always does....................................

Well, When you read the effect of Woodland Sprite, it makes no reference specifically to Equip Spell Cards. It plainly says "Equip Cards", which would lead me to believe that either a Equip "Spell or Trap" Card can be used for the effect of inflicting 500 damage.

Unfortunately, the ruling did not clarify that it is only refering to the fact that whatever card is used, it is not "destroyed", only "sent". So for those that may think Equip Traps are not affected, cannot be used, or are destroyed; they are treated the same as Equip Spell Cards (in as far as you can send Equip Traps to the Graveyard) for purposes of Woodland Sprites effect ONLY, but are not Equip Spell Cards.

Am I correct that all equip cards are equip SPELLS unless they were originally traps? In other words, no monster ever becomes an equip TRAP, right?
-pssvr
That is correct. In the case of monsters they default to Equip Spell Cards.
