Well I'm tryining out some new monster combos and i have to ask how do you play union monsters. Do they have to be summoned frist to use their equip ablity or can you just equip them like a normal equip card?

You have to summon them.

Their effect of Equipping to a monster is an Ignition effect, and thus can only be activated from the field during your main phase 1 or 2 (as they do not state otherwise).

But they certainly offer a level of gameplay that is unique from any other deck theme. The oft played one have, frankly been played to death, so you'll et more inout on those then any ohers. The seldom played ones are considered more diffcult to play, but might be more fun to explore the possibilities of.

The only unions worth playing would be VtoZ, with the others harder to play. Aoitsu and Koitsu are easy enough with UFO Turtle and Mother Grizzly. Then there is that LV7 WATER Parasite union monster that protects the monster from Spell Cards. The hardest to ultilize union, but also the one with the best combo is Burning Beast and Freezing Beast along with Combination Attack.

Not so. Heavy Mech is quite possibly the easiest Union in the game. It is also quite easy to pull out of the deck and especially compared to Aitsu and Koitsu is 1000% easier and more useful. The fact that it protects the equipped monster from more than just battle leaves it in a class all it's own (not to mention how great it makes Limiter Removal).

Heavy Mech Platform is not built on a Deck theme though. It just adds to the playability of Machine-Type Decks and if you are running VtoZ then you obviously would be running it.

If you are playing Unions 2 other good cards to help them out is Roll Out which lets you equip a Union in the graveyard the correct monster on the field. Also Front Line Base lets you special summon a lvl 4 Union monster from your hand which can help if you are planning to run VtoZ deck.

One thing that has helped unions out immesely is the new trap Roll Out! It allows you to pull a union monster from the grayveard and equip it to a proper target on the field.

The special thing to note about unions is that most, if not all of them have hte ability that when the monster it is equipped to is destroyed, the union equip is destroyed instead. This gives all of your monsters a certain level of "double tap" ability that I think is wonderful in the current meta that is running Sakuretsu/Mirror Force/Widespread Ruin to death.

As mentioned above, most unions do suffer a lack of attack power and that needs to be overcome in some shape or another.

My latest experiment is actuall an Archfiend/Machine hybrid that through the use of Heavy Mech Support Platform, it renders Terrorking Archfiend a whopping 2500 beast with effect negation on monsters it destroys plus the ability to roll to negate targeted effects. Its been quite tasty to this point.

Isn't Heavy Mech the only union that will protect it's monster from Widespread or Mirror Force? The rest only protect from battle destruction.

Yes, it is. My deck that I've used has been very effective. The use of the Platform makes the v-z peices all the more better.

I played Dark Hole, chained a roll out, killed 3 monsters (good ones i might add) saved my xz fusion and then used another roll out incase of traps, but i remembered the effect of my monster, discarded 1 card to destroy the face down, limitered for game then.

But now no more Dark Hole so, only for trap protection. Specially with the v-z fusion. MY MY, huge and powerful force.

Can you say pwned?

Wow! My immense error and my immense mistake! You're right. Most of the unions only protect when destroyed as a result of battle and not destroyed in general. Thanks for the clarification guys!

...oh yeah, DNA Surgery is definitley in there....pairs wonderfully with System Down too 8^D

just a question...if a machine monster equip with heavy mech attack and the other player activate mirror force...the heavy mech will be destroy as substitute...but the will the attacking monster continue attacking?

Hmmm.. Neve realize how much I depended on the auto-linking to remember my card effects. The API is down too. <ahem>

Well, at risk of mis-remembering my card effects :D Heavy Mech Support Platform only takes the bullet for destruction. It isn't negating the effects or actions that destroy the equipped monster. It's simply replacing itself for the card that would have been destroyed otherwise. It won't negate Mirror Force or any of it's other effects, as any other mosnters on the field in Attack Position would still be destroyed even if Heavy Mech takes the bullet for one of them.

Of course there are still people that think Mirror Force negates the attack like it did when it first came out and was later errata. It may not seem like a big deal but it really changed the perspective of the card.
