Wave Motion Cannons effect

Wave Motion Cannon:

Send this card on the field to the Graveyard during your Main Phase.
Inflict Direct Damage to your opponent's Life Points equal to the number
of your Standby Phases that have passed after this card was activated
x 1000 points.

Pretty simple wording and fairly straight forward, however what happens
if WMC is destroyed in your opponent's Main Phase by MST or Dust
Tornado? According to the text on the card, the owner MUST tribute
the spell card in his/her main phase in order to get the effect, if the
opponent destroys the card 3 turns later with a trap/spell card and
sends WMC to the graveyard, does the owner get the effect because
WMC is now in the graveyard or does the effect disappear because it
was destroyed before the owner could tribute the card to complete
the effect?

I see this card more and more in tournaments and I believe a correct
ruling should be made to clarify the cards effect.

If Wave Motion Cannon is destroyed before tributed, the effect of Wave Motion Cannon is not applied.

Note: If one does tribute Wave Motion Cannon, one cannot chain Mystical Space Typhoon/Dust Tornado and designate Wave Motion Cannon, Wave Motion Cannon is already in the graveyard since it's a cost to send it the graveyard.

In order to get the effect you have to send the card to the graveyard during your main phase.

Thats the risk of waiting for a long time to send it to the graveyard.

Once it is on the field the only ways to get if off the field is:

You send it to the Grave yard (get effect), MST (don't get effect), Heavy Storm (don't get effect), Giant Trunate (don't get effect and when set back on field have to start over with counters), fiber Jar (don't get effect), harpies feather duster (don't get effect), dust tornado (don't get effect), etc. (other monsters)

You have priority to use a card in your turn. So if you enter your standby phase, if you will do something, you activate it before the opponent.

If you say you don't do anything, he then can use Mystical Space Typhoon to destroy your wave motion.

If you activate something in standby phase, or use something his effect, he then can use Mystical Space Typhoon because he has an opportunity to activate it

Hope I have helped you

I believe the opponent is allowed to respond to your draw with the activation of a trap/quickplay so not doing anything in your standby phase won't prevent them from destroying your WMC, they can even respond to the end of one of your phases with a trap/quickplay if they want, think of it as: by choosing to end the phase you're announcing that you don't want to use priority and do anything, and so your opponent now has priority unless they also decide not to do anything.

If you're trying to suggest that you should tribute WMC in your standby phase, before your opponent can destroy it remember that WMC & it's tribute effect are both spell speed 1 and so can only be activated in one of your main phases.

You have to send WMC to the Graveyard in your Main Phase 1 or 2 to get its effect. If WMC is sent to the graveyard by any other means you loose its effect.

yes, if your opponent destroys it not during ur mainphase, then it does not atcivate. HOWEVER, if u declare to destroy it from it's effect, it counts as a cost, so ur opponent then cant chain w/ MST or dust tornado.
