Having browsed Wikipedia, looking up such tales as "The Fall of the House of Usher", "The Pit and the Pendulum" and "The Tell-Tale Heart", I happen to glance upon another. Further reading brings me swiftly to a copy of the text of this short story, which contains your excerpts.

No one suspected, indeed, or had reason to suspect, that she was not actually .(Hence, the premature aspect)

The funeral, in short, was hastened, on account of the rapid advance of what was supposed to be decomposition.The lady was deposited in her family vault. Again, reflection of a "premature burial" as she was laid in the vault (graveyard).

I enjoy quick turnarounds for guesses and clues to keep this thread moving at a nice pace. Gives a person a chance to post seemingly insignificant clues and watch the thought mechanisms.

You could say it's the Spirit reaper's vice.
 
Let's see...Vice: something immoral, depraved, degrading... hmmm...what does Spirit Reaper find immoral....maybe, Dark World?

The Reaper does indeed have an immoral or evil habit of practice... killing.. err taking the souls of the departed.. hmmm


So what could there be that does just that or even better would work in conjunction with Reaper to help him take away .. hmmm

Smashing Ground, Hammer Shot, Fissure? hmmm.... sorry just thinking out loud.... well thinking out loud IN TYPE to see if my thinking is on the right track..... I guess I should guess a card tho... but I still wanna know if this is the right train of thought...

"Even better"? Sounds worse to me.

I'd tell you that the answer is very much in the clue, but that should be obvious. Look at it again from all angles, see if you find something.

I'm surprised no one has guessed Spirit Reaper yet, actually. Interesting, since "Spirit reaper" by itself can very much lead you to the answer.
