Greets all,
I'm not one to do too many reviews of games out there, but I am a proud owner of a GBA and have been itching to get ahold of another good Yugi game for a while.
I made the mistake a while ago of trading in my copy of World Championship 2004 for the latest edition that came out after it (ick, I can't even remember the name). I found the gameplay on it EXTREMELY awful because they added some flavor into the game where a light monster automatically beats a dark monster. I had a Red Eyes Black Dragon trampled by a Magician of Faith and promptly turned in the game.
Alas, I finally arrived at getting GX Duel Academy this weekend and was EXTREMELY impressed with my first few hours on the game. For starters, the gameplay is pretty close to the general mechanics of the game.
I know there will always be glitches, but the fact that it prompts you to activate spell/trap/effects in between each phase, and when battle damage is done, and when equips have become equipped to a monster help newer players get a feel of the different phases and what is available to do.
The game is following the GX theme quite well, as you have a "calendar" in which are exams dates when new packs arrive at the shop, and other things. I haven't made it to an exam yet, but they look intriguing.
Additionally, you can get more packs through the use of Duel Points. You are given a good chunk of Duel Points at the beginning of the game in which you can buy a bunch of packs out the door.
One little secret, or not so secret now, is the Password Machine when you go to the shop. If you happen to pull out your favorite Yugi card, you'll notice there is a number on the bottom left hand corner of the card. Enter that number into the machine and see what turns up. My Wall of Illusion came up quite nicely, though I had to pay 1000 DP in order to add it to my deck, which is a bit pricey. Not all of the cards I tried are in the system, but they may be in there under different terms.
All in all I give this game an 8/10. Some people may not like the "limited" nature of doing nothing but dueling, but I love it since I don't get out much to tourneys outside of judging and it gives me some standard "Borg AIs" to test out new decks against. I just have to get all the cards now. 8^D
