What to do?

My TO tosses cards out into the crowd, has silly contests and, well, makes it fun to lose. As for having last week's winner wait, I kow that a lot of the really good players play on teams. Really quickly, you would simply have the #1 and #2 players swapping off weeks and be right back in the same situation. Rather, how about taking your usual winners (you know who they are) and having a championship series and a beginner series. Just set them for two different times during the day and explain to them. Hey, this is for those coming up in the game, the Big Dogs are playing at 2:00pm. I don't know, maybe it's hard to get a big enough draw to have that two different tournaments, but I'm working on starting a beginner's workshop to teach little ones how to play, strategy, rules, etc. and i know there is the potential to have a bigger show for the Jr. League than the regular local tournament.

Oh yeah, there most certainly IS potential in the "Jr." tournaments. We used to run a 13 & under tournament that often saw between 24-32 players at 10am Sat. morning. It was really fun to judge too as they played all SORTS of stuff you wouldn't see otherwise. The kids are playing wiht their peer group, the parents feel better about the age range, and it's a good chance to get the parents involved as they're usually a captive audience. I got more parents into the game by demoing while their kids were playing than any other way.

We used to have a rule that once a person won 3 Jr. tournaments they "graduated" and weren't allowed in the 13 & under tournament any longer...but we didn't sanction the 13 & under so it was allowable to do so....store rules.

There is another option to think about to. When I first started playing are store had a double elimation type of tournament. The tournament was set up as single elimation. If you lost in your first or second round you were dropped to the lower swiss tournament. Starting round 3 in the upper tournament you lose your out. Now if you lost 1st or 2nd round you would drop down in the other tournament and play another 2 or 3 rounds. Then they would cut to top 8. Most of the time the better players were in the main tournament and the less skilled players battled it out in the lower tournament. This way there were two winners each week.

actually DJ depengin on the Judge, players can either lose more point in rank or gain more points in rank, so over all... Sometimes it is like beign close to a regional.

Oh, we're talking single elimination tournaments? That's easy then! We ran into the same thing a couple of years back when that was the normal format. My solution was to have a Consolation Tournament. Everyone who lost in the first round (you could also make it the first and second rounds) was welcome, free of charge, to enter in the consolation tournament that began immediately following the start of round 2 of the normal tournament (or after the start of round 3 if you go the secondary route with this) There were prizes for the consolation tournament as well...not as big of prizes..but prizes non the less. In this way everyone who wanted to got to play at least two matches and those that lost first round were more likely to be playing other players fo like caliber in the consolation tournament.

It's an option that was much welcomed and appreciated when we ran it. It doesn't take up any more store space and only and little if any more time....and it keeps players happy.
